Appendectomy Aside, ISU Center Stephens Earns Praise in Sporting News

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State center Reggie Stephens is cautiously optimistic that he will be back in the lineup against Oklahoma State after undergoing an appendectomy on Oct. 27. Stephens' string of 36 straight starts at three different positions in the offensive line was broken Saturday when the senior missed ISU's 35-10 loss at Texas A&M. He did travel to his home state last weekend and watched from the sideline in street clothes.

Stephens' stock among NFL scouts is rising fast. Witness today's SportingNews Today evaluation of the 6-3, 333 senior from Rowlett, Texas by former NFL scout Russ Lande.

"Iowa State center Reggie Stephens grabbed our attention recently when he held his own against Nebraska's (Ndamukong) Suh (in Iowa State's 9-7 win in Lincoln on Oct. 24). Coming into the season, Stephens was viewed as a likely undrafted free agent but has had a strong senior season. He is now a mid-round prospect who can solidify that standing if he maintains his level of performance the rest of the season."

Iowa State plays host to No. 18 Oklahoma State Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on ABC-TV.

Reggie is one of my favorite Clones. I think he has been underrated for awhile now so glad to see him getting some love.

Herman said at the start of the year he felt some of the o-line guys would go pro without a doubt. Reggie was one. Believe Osemele and Lamaak were the other two.

He deserves the attention, the entire O-Line has been doing a great job all year. Would love to see a couple of these guys playing on Sunday.

Love Reggie. He's really anchored the line, moving over to center and kicking *** and taking names. Changing positions without a complaint for the betterment of the team, and then getting it done at the new position is an almost guaranteed way to become beloved by Cyclone fans.

Great news. That Nebraska game should have opened some eyes if he is holding his own with what many consider to be the best D-Line prospect.

(I don't know why exactly, but the thread title reminds me of the horrible ISU Daily headline from the mid-90's: "Stabbing Aside, VESHIEA a Success."

Would he play guard or center in the pros?

Good for him. Nice to see or big boys up front getting credit, hopefully it motivates the others around him and gives potential recruits something to think about. :)

I'll really miss his roster photos after he is gone to the NFL. Great player for the last 4 years.

Big Reggie fan here as well. 3 coaching staffs and he's still a Cyclone, says a lot about his loyalty. I'm really going to miss this whole Sr. class, what a great group of Cyclones. Hoping Reggie can hook on at the next level, I think he will and look forward to watching him.
