Stephens Will Play

Bobby La Gesse is reporting that Iowa State senior center, Reggie Stephens will start on Saturday when the Cyclones host Oklahoma State.

Last week, Stephens underwent an appendectomy that forced him to miss the Texas A&M game.

Check back to CycloneFanatic.com later on today for more information on this story and more, after Paul Rhoads' weekly press conference that is scheduled to start at around 11:30 a.m.

I would guarentee that he has a compression sleeve around his stomach to prevent any complications.

    obligatory "that's what she said"

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think appendectomies are a pretty minor surgery anymore- in and out with barely an incision. Althoguh I am surprised that he was cleared to play in less than a week.

They are a pretty minor surgery, but this still seems VERY early. I thought he would have a chance to comeback against CU but not OSU.

Yeah, you are right. Appendectomies are a minor surgery now in regards to how the surgans perform. There is not a big as an incision as they used to do it. (They cut you in 2-3 different places now.) From what I'm told.... They say 5-7 days tops after surgery that you should be feeling fine. I had a cousin playing at Simpson last year on the line have an appendectomy... and he was able to come back and play the following week as well. He'll be fine. Plus, this is his Sr. year.....he wants to go bowling....and we need him back on the line for Oky State.

    Re: Stephens Will Play

Wouldn't surprise me if he's feeling some pressure on himself to get back in, what with being a senior leader, big guy, etc. Especially after the bad loss we just had. I'm confident he knows what he's doing, but I also think if we'd looked fine against A&M then perhaps he wouldn't feel so rushed to return?

Then again, I'm not a doctor.

    Re: Stephens Will Play

He was moving around pretty good on the sidelines saturday. It really surprised me for a guy having an apendectomy on wednesday. Honestly, with as good/pain free as he looked saturday, this doesn't surprise me much.

    Now if Austen could play...

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

If his appendix burst (which I'm assuming it didn't due the recovery time) it'd take much longer because they need to pull all your guts out and vacuum out the poisin from it don't they? I think this usually take a little bit longer for recovery as opposed to just having appendicitis (sp?) and having it removed.

    Re: Stephens Will Play

My appendix ruptured when I was in 5th grade. Had surgery on a Sunday, was released from the hospital the following Sunday. Was supposed to take that week off from school, but went anyway and was playing basketball by Wednesday (10 days after surgery). The whole week I was in the hospital I had a tube in me to drain abcess from the wound. Couldn't eat anything but ice for the first 4 days. Not much fun.

I had the same surgery a few years ago. The surgeon could tell I was spooked as they were wheeling me into the operating room, so he assured me that the surgery was really minor. I replied that surgery is only minor if it's happening to somebody else - he laughed.

I was in the hospital for one night and went home with three inch-long incisions in my lower abdomen. Although a lot of folks disagreed, I thought Reggie would be ready to go by the Colorado game.
