    TV/Internet Help

I know this has been discussed in past threads but waswondering if anybody could give me the shortened version. I'm giving up on Direct TV since they no longer have VS. I am a hockey guy and need VS to watch it...

I also want a fast internet provider.

    Feed back would be appreciated.

Thanks fellow fanatics. This is always my first stop for help.

Oh yeah, I live in Ames. Mediacom and Dish Network seem like the only other cable providers and either Mediacom or Qwest for internet.

Doesn't hockey have something similar to Sunday ticket(Center ICe)? Seems kind of silly to leave a provider over one channel especially a crappy one.

Have you tried to call directv and ask them if they'll give you center ice for free or you'll leave or something similar?

It would depend on whom he's a fan of. Don't forget too that DirecTV carries The NHL Network and forgetabout it with Mediacom.

I don't want to pay for the entire center ice package.... Both Dish Network and Mediacom have VS for around $80/month.

I did call and complain. They offered me the sports package... doesn't help with the hockey side of things.

    Re: TV/Internet Help

    1. Contact DirecTV and inquire about channel listings (sometime under "Add / Remove a Channel").
    2. Express your displeasure with DirecTV's decision to drop Versus from its lineup. Ask if there are any promos to compensate you for your dissatisfaction.
    3. Receive a 50% discount on the package. Normally the package is 1 payment of $163.80, but after 50% off, you'll get it for 1 payment of $81.90.

If they don't offer anything than say "I want to cancel". At that point they'll transfer you to someone who will probably offer you this deal.

As far as the internet, the fastest for you would be mediacom but it will also be about double the price of DSL. You'll save $10/month by using mediacom for both.

What team(s) are you a fan of? CSN Chicago has a large number of Blackhawk games and with the Sportspack, FSN North has the Wild (not to mention a ton of college hockey), and FSN Midwest is now the exclusive TV home of the Blues (increasing the number of Blues games that are televised).

I like the Pens but that doesn't matter. Really want to see the playoff games come March.

How many Pens games are on VS? You're going to go through the hassles of switching providers to see maybe 10 regular season Pen games (i'm just throwing that number out there) and for all we know, DirecTV & Comcast will have kissed and made up by the end of the NHL regular season. I guess to each his own.

    Re: TV/Internet Help

I am asking for opinions on best options... If DirecTV is still the best option, then I will stay. I selected DirecTV a year ago because they had VS. Now they don't. I'm tryingto weigh my options now.

Who has best service? What is advantage of DirecTV or Dish Network over Mediacom? Seems like Mediacom has fastest internet and a great deal right now but their prices will jump in a year or two.

I've never owned Dish so I won't comment.

Mediacom has the best internet but the most expensive.

Directv and Mediacom are similar in price for TV but Directv has a LOT more HD and you get more channels overall. In addition, Directv has a little better picture in both SD and HD. About 4-5 times per year Directv will go out because of weather conditions. Last year Directv had a lot more ISU football games but that doesn't seem to be the case this year. Both have good DVR's but you'll pay for the Directv ones and not own them. I believe Mediacom will still give you an HD DVR for free and then just charge you a monthly fee.

I think you'll find that Dish is the cheapest of the 3 not counting the big discounts that Mediacom will give you the first year.

    Re: TV/Internet Help

I don't have MCHSI, but isn't their base speed up to 12 down now? I have DirecTV and Qwest DSL bundled together, however, my DSL speed is 1.5 down and with DSL, you still have to have a seperate ISP, in my case I go through Qwest have MSN.

As far as video providers go, it's really up what you want and are willing to pay for. DirecTV is hands down better than Dish Network and Mediacom when it comes to sports. DirecTV has MLB Network and NFL Network, Mediacom has neither and Dish Network only has NFL Network.

I believe Dish Network has HD only packages, DirecTV and Mediacom doesn't. Mediacom has free HD (all be it a small lineup), you have to pay extra for HD on DirecTV.

Mediacom has Fox College Sports on a full time basis in it's sports pack, DirecTV doesn't.

In Central Iowa, Comcast Sportsnet is the default RSN on DirecTV and there's no guarantee of Big 12 coverage. FSN Midwest and their Big 12 coverage is the only RSN available on Mediacom.

With DirecTV and the sportspack, you get all of the Twins games in HD. On Mediacom, you might get 4 or 5 a year on the Connections Channel.
