Defensive Player Should Win the Heisman

Especially after watching Suh last weekend, and seeing the likes of Terrance Cody & Eric Berry later that day, now more than ever, a defensive player should not only be considered for the Heisman, but should probably win it.

Not since Charles Rodgers in '97 has a defensive player won the Heisman, but even he returned kicks and got plenty of snaps at WR.

Now, I'm not trying to discredit some of the better offensive performers this year, but the most outstanding, most impactful and most talented performances have been put in place by guys on the defensive side of the ball.

Unfortunately, the two most talented players in America play for a 3-4 Tennessee team (Berry) and a 4-3 Nebraska team (Suh).

The fact is, the award probably will go to Colt McCoy or Jimmy Clausen. McCoy looked pretty good last week against Mizzou and he can continue to strengthen his campaign with a solid performance against Oklahoma State in prime time this Saturday. Clausen has the stats to win it, and if ND keeps winning, he'll be a finalists as well.

Not saying that McCoy or Clausen don't deserve it, but let's give some of these outstanding defensive guys a look.

Suh is the best player in college football.

I'll probably get slaughtered for this but...you could probably put the Taxi Man Adrian Clayborn up there, without him that team's defense is going to have to blitz more and is not undefeated. With him it gets a solid 4 man pressure rush.

Without a doubt the best player in the country. The guy is good enough to start on Sundays right now.

He's been pretty good. Doubt he'll be back next year, and you can't blame him.

Mark Ingram from Alabama would get my vote for the Heisman right now

Clayborn is definitely an NFL ready talent. If he wants to go pro, he'll certainly get nabbed.

IMO, he's clearly the MVP of one of the 5 undefeated BCS teams. Some would argue Sash, but I would argue that w/out the pressure Clayborn gets on the QB, Sash would have about half as many picks.

Ingram is a solid pick. He's looked fantastic this year. I'm just sick of discrediting defensive players every year. If you want to give out an award to the best player with the best season, then do it. Right now, that is Suh.

    Suh is the best.
    Clayborn is really good.

Tebow better not get any votes. He has not done much this year. Any vote he get's right now would be because he is Tebow and some sports writers just love him.
Now the season is not over so he could still do something.

Agree 100% with all of this but every ISU fan knows that that trophy is not for what's bolded.

Re: Defensive Player Should Win the Heisman

Under the current ideals of college football, a defensive player will not win a Heisman. I think it should be Ingram this year but Suh should be in New York. Charles Woodson won because he maybe the best defensive college football player ever, but he also had the huge punt return against Ohio State which ended up putting him there. I firmly believe that in my lifetime he will be the only defensive play to win one.

It's Charles Woodson, not Charles Rogers. I think there was a Charles Rogers that was a pretty good WR for Mich State though.

I don't care who wins the heisman as long as it isn't Tebow. He has realy not played well lately yet is still at the top of a lot of people's heisman list.

It's still very early but I have yet to see a draft expert say he is more than a 4th rounder at this point.

If he's not at least a second rounder this year there is no reason for him to come out. He's either going to be a light 4-3 end or a 3-4 OLB at the next level.

Re: Defensive Player Should Win the Heisman

I agree with the OP that ANY position should be considered for the award that goes to the "Best Collegiate Football Player". And that should include every division of the NCAA

However, sad to say, the Heisman Trophy Award is a sham; a glorified popularity contest who's outcome is about as legit as an Olympic Ice Skating competition and the panel of voting members cast their wishes based on collegiate politics, popularity, race, favoritism - heck it would not surprise me to hear if voters have been bought.

"We are first and foremost an educational institution that values integrity, honesty and treating others with fairness and respect".
