    The Hook and Lateral/Ladder

OK, I just remembered this but during the Iowa game Saturday night on the Michigan State drive where they went ahead with a minute and a half left or so they executed a FANTASTIC hook and ladder play which got them ~ 40 yards and I wondered out loud, why doesnt this play get used more? Nobody ever expects it, and it doesnt seem like it's too risky. If the player who is to recieve the pitch is being covered to closely, the WR can just hang onto it and go down or turn upfield.

Can you imagine, if ISU (or any team) ran that play on the first play of the game? Nobody would ever expect it. Why isnt this play used more?

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

    Hook and lateral

Probably not used much because it's high risk-high reward. If the pitch guy gets hit as he's trying to toss it, the end result may not be good. I think that's one reason why you see it late in games when they can reasonably ascertain what the defense is going to give.

    Or "hook and ladder".
Both seem to be common terms:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life:
The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers

That's a great point about the end of the game the defense probably giving more room.

I was happy with our fake punt. I have a feeling if Herman felt it was a worthwhile move, he would do this as well. Could happen when he feels more confident with the product on the field.

Pretty sure the terms are interchangeable, much like "shovel pass" and "shuffle pass".

    Yep -

I was in shock when I saw that. It was unbelievably well executed and totally unexpected.

But I said aloud... what happens if Iowa is playing a tighter man coverage in that instance? When it works, it looks great. But up until it actually "works", IMO it's a fumble waiting to happen.

That's exactly why it worked. 3rd and a mile, DBs playing way off. Guy runs a curl route 10 yards short of a first down. Any closer to the 1st down line and he should get popped right when the ball gets there.

I was more saying during the game you get to see who you can pick on. If you have corners playing tight, or safeties who fly up as soon as the quarterback's arm goes up, you can't throw it because the pitch man is going to get hit before he can get rid of it. Ideally you'd like him to take a step or 2 to the side opposite the guy that's taking the pitch to get the defense moving in the wrong direction, and you can't do that if the safeties or corners are playing tight.

A great play called at the perfect time.

I can't say I have seen it in a college game, more often in high school and occasionally in the NFL.
