    Camping

Anybody do any winter camping? I just got back from a multi-day trip. The warmest temperature was 10 below and I was sleeping at night in the 20 below and 30 below range in snow caves.

    Re: Camping

I've been cold weather camping before. Some of my best nights camping, in terms of getting good sleep, have come in the winter.

I went through USAF survival school at Eielson --- -30 at night warming to a near zero. Lived in a group snow shelter 2 nights then our own hand-built iglooy thing for 3. It was just flat-out cold but not unbearable.

Two of the guys I went camping with went through that same school. They referred to it as the "cool school."

Where were you? And can I ask what you did to keep warm and what you did for fun? I don't think I'd want to do it now after being cold for 4 months now!

    they were awesome

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

I was inland (north) of Nome. The sleeping bag I used was rated for 60 below and was warm enough that I slept comfortably. For fun, we watched wildlife, reindeer, caribou, musk ox, moose.

    Re: Camping

I love cold weather camping. The sleep is awesome, provided you know how to get a good shelter constructed and your sleeping bag is competent. Plus, you usually get the place all to yourself, unless there is a large sno-mobile trail nearby.

Did you see any Bigfoot creatures?

    Re: Camping

I recently saw Man vs. Wild on Discovery with Ben Grylls "surviving" Alaska. It looks beautiful up there. I don't know about camping in -30 temps, but I have to get up there sometime for some fly fishing and hiking.

I am not sure about catching salmon streamside and taking a big bite out of it right there........but the fishing and outdoor activities must be great.

is there a difference between reindeer & caribou? I always thought they were the same animal with two names (like the mountain lion - puma thing).

I also heard musk oxen are a lot smaller than you'd expect, because they're always photographed in the tundra, without any size frame of referance.

I believe that reindeer is a subspecies of caribou, kind of like two different breeds of dog. Reindeer were brought over from Europe while caribou are native to the area. Reindeer are farmed for their meat, caribou are hunted for their meat.

Musk ox look like pretty large critters to me. The good thing is that they aren't all that fast so you are safe as long as you keep your distance
