    long snapper Zimmerman

Has anyone notice that our long snapper Zimmerman on almost every fieldgoal and extra point is just getting blowen up and pushed back into the kick every time. He is accurate getting the ball back there but the last four games I have noticed that every snap he is just getting ran over and is the big reason for the blocked kicks. Is there anyone else we have that can hold their ground on kicks?

Todays win was great and I couldn't be happier but we still can keep improving and get better.

    Re: long snapper Zimmerman

I couldnt believe that Baysinger didnt block down on Suh on that first kick block yesterday.

It is a problem that Im sure we will soon fix.

    Re: long snapper Zimmerman

Coaches will get it straightened out. We can fix the blocks...what we can't fix are actual misses.

Hopefully Grant gets on another hot streak and I'll leave it to the coaches to get the blocks figured out.

Exactly... hes the best DL in the nation. Maybe the best college football player in the nation.

On replay it looked like Baysinger was relatively uncovered and he failed to help by blocking down on Suh shooting the gap.

It's not the snapper's fault. Suh beat Reggie on the blocked extra point and Trey on the blocked field goal.

    Re: long snapper Zimmerman

When I played, as an offensive lineman, we were trained to take a step in the direction of the snapper, which caused us to block down to the middle. Your chances of someone blocking it up the middle are much greater than someone shooting off the end.

Pretty basic stuff, I'll have to watch next time and see if our guys are defending a gap or defending a man.

It's really hard to tell who slipped up, but the teamwork necessary for an effective double team seemed to be lacking in both cases.

I'll give credit to NE for two solid coaching points.

First in both cases, the defender 1st made contact with the guard's shoulder before immediately sliding into the center's gap. This prevented them from being accused of directly attacking the long snapper while he is in a defenseless position.

Second, they switched the side that they attacked on the 2nd play. This took advantage of our guys trying to over-compensate for the 1st block and also let them go after Trey who was filling in for Lamaak when he went out with the illness.

    Re: long snapper Zimmerman

I don't understand why the extra point holder doesn't just set up another 5 yards back, so Mahoney's gets have a chance to get more elevation before they reach the LOS. If he can make a 52 yard FG, 5 more yards on an extra point should be nothing. Better blocking would help a lot too.

After watching the guy from Iowa Knuckle ball three through the uprights last nigtht I am surprised they haven't had several kicks blocked.

I asked my brother this question as well. With an extra point you are so close that distance isnt an issue. What would it hurt to snap the ball back another 3 yards? Unless that would totally screw up the snappers rhythm/routine.

Pretty unbelievable huh. All three of those knuckleballs would have been blocked in the last 3-4 ISU games.
