    Defense winning us games?

Who in the hell would have thought that? It's just frickin' amazing and I'm not even sure that covers it. In the last two weeks, our defense has given up 17 points, 7 of which came in garbage time.

And in the last two weeks, our defense has yielded 11 turnovers )and one turnover on downs). 11!

This same group averaged giving up 30+ points per game last season - virtually the same exact group.

It's clear that while we have much potential on offense, defense will be the deciding factor on how many more wins we get this season.

People keep saying this but remember our two best defensive lineman (Kurtis Taylor and Rashawn Parker) aren't in the group anymore. This makes things even more impressive.

    +1

Yesterday was the first time when I watched our defense come on the field at the end of the game to try to stop a potential game winning drive and I was confident they were going to do.

The attitude of this Defense is so fun to watch; they never quit, never stop attacking & desipite their lack of team speed, are all over the field.

    Re: Defense winning us games?

This is what was so aggravating about last year. Our offense was performing well enough to win games, but the defense just looked befuddled all year, even though we all knew they were not playing up to their talent level.

I mean, the talent last year wasn't All-American by any stretch of the imagination, but they didn't play as a team like they seem to be now. Could it just be that they all have one more year of experience under them? Maybe, but more likely it has to do with coaching.

    Re: Defense winning us games?

I've been proud of the defense as well, obviously they aren't the most talented bunch of guys but this staff has them playing hard and we're getting everything possible out of them. I think the offense has a lot to do with the defensive sucess as well. Our running game has been eating up time of possesion and allowing the defense to not only be on the field less but force some urgency for our opposition. The drive early in the 4th yesterday although we came up empty killed like 7 minutes of the clock and gave the D some time to rest. I don't the Huskers ran the ball more than a couple times after that drive.

The front page picture in the Register today shows it perfectly, Zac Lee getting sacked by Fred Garrin, James Smith and of course Jesse Smith all at the same time. The whole defense was incredible yesterday giving up just 7 points but we don't win yesterday or this year without Jesse Smith.

    Re: Defense winning us games?

I think on the whole, our D has played beyond my expectations this season.

Our O hasn't been quite as good as I expected.

Overall, I have to give a lot of props to Wally and the D. With the exception of the KU game, they've played winning football.

Wally Burnham is a stud. Please let him stay around for a while (not worried about him leaving for another job, but retirement).

    Re: Defense winning us games?

IMO, it was the good to great offensive play yesterday that won the game.

NU has the best DL in the nation... and we ran the ball chewed up clock when we had to. the offense did not, DID NOT, turn the ball over.

THe NU offense is that bad...... however they have dolts running/throwing the football. There were enough plays that showed their Oline blowing up our front seven.... it seemed they were one cut from big gains.

credit to the ISU defense... but to me the Offense did what it needed to, when it needed to.

Absolutely unbelievable isn't it?!? The guys look ten times more disciplined out there this year...I really hope we can hang onto Wally, Herman, and Coach Bleil for as long as possible (although I think Wally might be a bit old to be jumpin ship)..Coach Rhoads has surrounded himself with a great coaching staff, and it's fun watching our guys improve from week to week.

    Who would have thunk?

I think our defense has overachieved this season while offense has underachieved.

    I think both have overachieved.

This offense is running the ball VERY well, and passing it really well considering how limited we have been at WR all year.

No doubt that the defensive genius isn't so genius when he doesn't have national championship talent.

Wally Burnham did a great job at USF and he is doing a great job at ISU.

A lot of the turnovers NU had yesterday were forced...strips and the like...and that bone crushing hit that LJ put on the NU QB...that type of hit forces turnovers.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
