    "The Fake"

What a gutsy call (and led to the game winning score by the way). That play will go down as one of the bigger plays in Cyclone history. That was 100% coaching preparation.

Down 7-3, we faked a punt and Brandtner ran for about 20 yards for a first down. The next play we went for the home run and got the 47 yd TD from Tiller to Williams

    Re: "The Fake"

That was perfectly scouted out. Love to see a coaching staff pay so much attention to detail to know that they were pulling off of the blocks way early to set up a return. Brandtner had miles to run for. Great coaching and execution. I'll always remember that and the deep ball that followed. Tiller throws a nice long ball.

Definately one of the biggest plays of the game.

I was hoping we would see a deep look after a big play finally. I was saying this to my dad last week when we blocked the punt against Baylor. Get them on their heels and go for the throat!

    Re: "The Fake"

So was that actually called, or was it a read by the punt team? Nebraska's return team took off to form the wall before Brandtner (sp?) even caught the ball, leaving the whole left side of the field open. I mean obviously it was something they worked on during the week, but I wonder if the coaches specifically ordered it, or just told Brandtner and the personal protectors to look for it based on how they aligned?

It was definitely called. If you look at the replay, you can see the lead blockers leave before Brandtner carried out his "fake." They wouldn't have done that if it was a called punt.

    Well scouted, well coached. Perfection.

    CPR is a god send.

    Re: "The Fake"

It was called. CPR said that on the first punt of the game Nebraska did something new they haven't done so far this season in covering punts. So the coaches adjusted to make the fake work properly if they needed it. They called the fake later and Nebraska went back to the way they were covering before.

The play was supposed to go up the middle but MB saw grass to the edge and ran for it. It worked in the end and was a great call.

Since Brandtner made it to NU's 47, and it was about a 20 yard run, I would guess that the line of scrimmage for the fake would be approximately our 33

    Re: "The Fake"

I was still listening to the radio when it happened, and in the replays I've seen so far I've only been watching the NU line take off. It's a coaching point for my junior high team - make sure the ball is kicked on punts, and that it goes over your head on kickoffs.

    Re: "The Fake"

Just watched the Huskers.com replay of the game. The comment at the end made me burst out laughing.

"Would you look at that. It's like their National Championshi--" and the video cuts out after that.

Their announcer did a good job of at least calling the game with an impartial (bipartial?) voice, but that comment sounded at least like the color commentator.

    Re: "The Fake"

I remember at the Iowa game, we did the onside kick and it failed. A lot fans hated that, but I loved it that Rhoads had the guts to try it. We've had past coaches who were too conservative in my opinion and would rarely try things like that and if they did it usually failed.

If we didn't do that play today, we lose the game. Great coaching, great execution, and a great result.
