Iowa HS Playoff System - Like or Dislike?

Starting last year, the state began letting four teams from each district into the "playoffs."

They call the first round sub-state.

Do you guys like four teams making the post season?

I used to hate it but it's really grown on my. I know that all of these squads aren't playoff football teams but more kids get to play in a big-time game...I think that's cool.

    What are your opinions?

    No good.

Our 8-man team almost made the playoffs last year with 3 (I think) wins.

    no good whatsoever.

Its a money grab and a joke. It takes from the good teams.

I wish it would have been around when I was in high school. We would have made the playoffs every year but since we played in a awesome district we never went. I agree I think it is great for the kids. It kind of has the same feel as HS basketball playoffs which are great IMO.

    And from history.

There used to be 7 win teams that didn't make the playoffs.

Re: Iowa HS Playoff System - Like or Dislike?

For the A 1A and 2A I love it. and technically it isn't a "playoff game" it is a qualifying game.

Why I like it is because this qualifying game helps to tell the difference of the stronger or weaker districts. For example. Say all 4 teams in district 1 beat all 4 teams in district 2, before the top 2 teams in district 2 would have made the playoffs and that's not fair.

With the new system you can definitely tell the difference between the stronger and weaker districts...Thumbs up to the IAHSAA

Dislike. 3 win teams against 9-0/8-1 teams is a waste of time and begs for injuries.

Making the playoffs should be a reward or treat a payoff for a good season. Not some make you feel good trip. The old way most of the teams that made the playoff were truly special teams. The battle to make the playoffs usually went down to the last game of the season.

Absolutely brutal. It used to mean something to qualify for the playoffs. Can't say that anymore.

I agree, but I disagree. I am not up on Iowa high school football this year, but I doubt there are 4 teams in one district who could even make it to the dome. I mean if you look at D1 3A there may be a .500 team in the playoffs. It's a waste. Hell, a lot of times the second place team in a district is a joke. I would say that happened more frequently than 4 teams deserving. I liked 2 teams. most of the time that is all that was needed. Now, if you wanted to do a wild card type of thing, that may be OK, but it would be hard to determine who was deserving. I like 2 from each district. Plus it is just more football for high school kids that may also have another sport to prepare for.

    I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU
