Mini display to HDMI to TV

I have a MacBook Pro from this summer (after the most recent "redesign") with the mini display port on it. I am connecting it to my HDTV.

I had temporarily borrowed a mini display to DVI adapter and plugged it into a DVI to HDMI cable, which went to the TV. Worked just fine.

I bought from Monoprice a mini display to HDMI adapter and used an existing (working) HDMI cable to connect to the TV. Won't work.

The laptop acts like it is connecting (screen flashes) and so does the TV (screen goes blank) but a few seconds later, the TV provides a message that there is no detectable device connected. I've tried it on 2 different TVs, both Sony HD sets, one a rear projection from 2007 and then another new (from last month) LCD Sony HDTV.

Searched online for some troubleshooting with no luck. Any idea what the problem may be?

Did you ever get this figured out? I have decided to switch to a MacBook Pro and was looking at the options for connecting to my TV and hadn't seen any mini display to HDMI yet. I had only looked on Apple's website thus far and if I don't have to do a mini to DVI to HDMI the better I would guess.

Bought a regular HDMI cable. Then got this from MonoPrice (link below)...keep in mind the newer MacBooks are using mini display, not mini DVI.

Oh...my problem ended up being a bad part from MonoPrice. I narrowed it down to that, called 'em and they sent a new one out right away - didn't even have to send back the bad one first.

Plenty of regular HDMI cables around here, found a bundle of three 6' via slickdeals for $7 a while back. This still won't take care of the sound though will it, just a video output? I am happy to see that monoprice had these adapters, didn't know if there was third party solutions out there. My computer won't be arriving until the 19th and I have been combing through the old threads trying to read up prior to getting it. I almost held off with the rumors of the i5/i7 refresh coming up but waiting can be a never ending cycle and I think the 2.8 Core Duo should be fine for everything I need.

How is the quality sending video from a MacBook to HDTV using these cables? Can you watch ESPN360 easily?

Correct, that won't carry sound to the best of my knowledge - but I have not tried sound. I'm only using it to display my monitor on a larger TV. Most likely you'll need an audio cable for that.

Quality is great, although I have only tried video once and it wasn't streamed - but that should not matter.

i have the same thing, you need to make sure the adapter and the DVI cable are fit together as tight as possible, i thought mine was together and wasnt working, so i put the coupling together literally as hard as i could and it worked
