Medders 1st team Big 12 Wieben honorable mention

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Lyndsey Medders was named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while sophomore Nicky Wieben was an honorable-mention pick, the Big 12 Conference office announced Friday afternoon. It marks the third straight year that at least two Cyclones have earned Big 12 postseason honors.

Medders earned her second consecutive All-Big 12 honor, while Wieben’s award was the first of her career. An All-America candidate, Medders broke the Iowa State career assists record during the non-conference season and now holds the top ISU mark at 681. She ranked sixth in the nation to begin the week with 6.5 assists per game this season after leading the nation last year as a junior. She leads the Cyclones in scoring with 12.4 points per game and has earned a plethora of honors and awards already this season, including ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team, Academic All-Big 12 First Team, Big 12 Player of the Week (Jan. 15-21) and has been named to the all-tournament teams at the Pepperdine tourney and the Cyclone Classic, where she was named the MVP.

Wieben is Iowa State’s second leading scorer this season with 12 points per game and ranks third in the Big 12 with 1.8 blocks per game. The sophomore has scored in double figures in 19 games this season, including a pair of double-doubles, and has led ISU in scoring in 11 contests. She ranks second on the ISU career blocked shot chart with 112 in just her second season in a Cyclone uniform. She holds both the freshman and sophomore records for season blocks.

Texas A&M’s Gary Blair was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year, while Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris earned Player of the Year accolades as well as Defensive Player of the Year honors. Baylor’s Bernice Mosby is the Newcomer of the Year, while Oklahoma State’s Andrea Riley was named the Freshman of the Year and Texas A&M’s Danielle Gant won the Sixth Man Award.

Iowa State opens the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., against Kansas State. The Cyclones finished the regular season with a 22-7 overall record and a 10-6 mark in the Big 12 to tie for fourth place in the final league standings.

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

    Congrats to Lyndsey and Nicki!!!

If they had one more spot for newcomer, "T" deserves it.

If they had one more spot for defensive team, "Ron" deserves it.

Re: Medders 1st team Big 12 Wieben honorable mention

I agree, though it is difficult to compare without seeing everyone play in different situations, Ross and Ronhovde certainly merit consideration. I don't know if a jc transfer is a newcomer, but, I think so because they don't call it a frosh team. If they did, there are few frosh in the conference that I'd favor over Lacey. Perhaps that mid-season lapse hurt our image.
