I'm glad they have the time to do this, what with their 2-3 day workweeks, and not having enough time to read the bills theyre voting on. Bravo to these guys.

Re: Congressmen join forces to try and kill BCS

I'd like to see Iowa go undefeated and get pushed out by two other undefeateds.
The college football season is great, but the bowl system is such a joke. Unless you're in the NC game, it's like winning the NIT tourney in MBB, congratulations you won something no one cares about.

The teams that play these games do care, besides the economical impact which is obvious. I though am not a advocate of the BCS either but the bowl games still need to be a part of college football.

I don't care how much anyone cares about college football. The BCS is the last thing congress should be worrying about. Lets worry about the deficit, terrorism etc. When that is all resolved then they can move on to more important things like the BCS.

Exactly. There are about 100,000 things that they need to handle before they take on the challenge of the BCS.

Someone with a better understanding of Constitutional Law than myself can elaborate, but I'm pretty sure Congress can use its Commerce Power here as long at they can justify that the BCS has a detrimental effect on interstate commerce (which can be done with just about anything).

I wouldn't support Congressional action at all though.

Clearly this should be priority one. Clearly.

Re: Congressmen join forces to try and kill BCS

I still think that college football playoff should be the best 16 teams. The 12 conference champions, including the best Independents (Notre Dame) and four wildcard teams (best record) should play the first and second weeks in December at the home stadium of the higher seeds. The losers of these games will play in bowl according to affiliation/league etc. The winners will play on January 1 at either Rose, Fiesta, Orange etc. with the winners there playing for the national championship one week later.

Re: Congressmen join forces to try and kill BCS

If a playoff is instituted, I just ask that it begin right away in December so that the teams that don't make it in the top 16 (or 8 or whatever) can participate in a bowl game in late December/January and not be completely overshadowed. Teams that lose early in playoff competition can participate in bowl competition as well.

I honestly never see a playoff happening though.

Re: Congressmen join forces to try and kill BCS

Anything more than an eight team playoff would be a terrible idea, and I still don't even like the idea of an eight team playoff. The playoff would have to start in the middle of December and would overshadow the existing bowls and make them like the NIT. Right now the minor bowls get a decent audience because there is nothing else on and they are a nice build up to the big bowls. That wouldn't be the case with a playoff and most of the minor bowls would disappear. Also, the regular season wouldn't mean as much and the days of one loss being crushing to a team's national title hopes would be over.

You could have the best of both worlds with a Plus One, and I think that will come eventually.

It's all window dressing. They're hoping that Joe Sixpack will be pacified by the thought that they're addressing an issue he cares about, while the country crumbles around him.

The minor bowls basically are an NIT... What do they get for attendance? 20k? 30k?

Re: Congressmen join forces to try and kill BCS

Anything other than the NC game is just like the NIT. You can call it a BCS bowl or Jan 1 bowl and pretend it matters more, but it's just a consolation game at the end of the year that's fun for fans and players.

At least with an 8 or 16 team playoff you have a lot of teams with a chance to win it all. I don't see how more meaningful games doesn't make D-1 football more exciting and profitable. I personally wouldn't miss any of those games unlike most of the bowls.

We can still have the bowls for the teams that don't make the playoff.
