Tailgating - What to expect in Lincoln?

Making the trip to Lincoln for the first time this weekend and just am wondering what to expect on game day, especially with an early kick-off. We are staying at the Embassy Suites by the stadium so hopefully that will help. I've heard there is not much real tailgating and people go to bars instead. Any advice/insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Tailgating - What to expect in Lincoln?

Expect not a lot of tailgaiting. Nothing like JTS. I was shocked when we went to Lincoln the last time we played there. For having 85,000 people in the game there sure wasn't much tailgating.

We went to some area pretty near the stadium where there are a few bars which seemed pretty popular.

There really isn't tailgating like we know it. We just kind of wandered around with a mobile cooler, pouring our beer into cups. I guess the bars are the thing to do.

lincoln doesnt tailgate. well they say they do, but they dont get it. just go to bars in the haymarket area. their idea of tailgating is parallel parking on a side street and sipping a beer before walking to the stadium to watch warm ups.

There's an Indian Center (not joking - that's what it's called, and it's reservation land) just North of Memorial Stadium (little under a mile away) that allows people to park, bring out grills, beer, etc. for around $10 or so. That's what we did a couple years ago. Worked pretty well.

Try the Baseball/Softball Complex that is about 3/4 mile from Memorial. You pay $20 to park there and there are some nice open spaces to Tailgate, not too bad, but no Jack.

Embassy Suites is Great, that is very close (3 blocks ???) from the Stadium. Embassy use to have "Do the Dock" at Embassy Suites. They had an open area by their loading dock, a local Radio Channel was there Broadcasting with a Band. It was something like $5 all you could drink, they had a good Band, not too bad.

Friday night before the game, go to Sidetracks. I have never been there, but everyone says that it is pretty fun.

Lincoln Husker Fans are pretty good. They are much better than the Road Husker Fans who enjoy picking Fights and Mouthing off. Husker Fans will come up to you and be real friendly. Wear your ISU stuff, don't worry about someone Taunting you, they don't do that in Lincoln. I expect that after the bombing T Tech gave them, they will be real quite until Kickoff.

Most of the lots don't let you have an open flame, so grills are a no-no.

That is pretty much dead on. Nebraska fans were the nicest of all the Big 12 North schools.

Don't. Most overrated "tradition" in the history of time. I'd rather tongue a pencil sharpener than go there again.

Re: Tailgating - What to expect in Lincoln?

Nebraska fans are the nicest I've met by a mile. Of course, it almost came off a bit underhanded or conceited at times. It almost feels like they get off on congratulating themselves for being good fans.

But not to complain, that beats raving aholes (Iowa) or the cold shoulder (Baylor). Nebraska fans are good.

Re: Tailgating - What to expect in Lincoln?

The Indian Center post was a real find in this thread. Should I plan a return trip to Lincoln for a game again I might try that.

Outside of that, I would recommend that you pass on tailgating in Lincoln at all. It's terrible. I would focus your food and beverage enthusiasm in Omaha the night prior to and evening after the game.

I also echo the sentiments of the other comments on here about the Nebraska fans. I've always found them friendly, engaging and fun.
