    "We're a football state": A Convenient Refrain

This seems to be a more prevalent media mantra in recent years. Coincidentally (I'm sure), this has corresponded with the sustained success of Iowa football and the tanking of Iowa basketball.

Is it just me, or is this a complete fabrication? Don't get me wrong- I love Cyclone football. In terms of my annual excitement level, I would give basketball a very slight 51/49 advantage, which is probably the result of a disparity in TV coverage when I was growing up. It's pretty even in my mind. To say that Iowa is a "______ state" the emotional investment would have to be noticeably higher for one sport over a long period of time. I don't see it.

In fact, I think you can reasonably argue that our state has a much richer basketball tradition at both the college and high school level. Like many states in the upper midwest, Iowans love to pack the gyms and huddle around our TVs over the long cold winters and enjoy some basketball. When did we suddenly become Nebraska? If you were to give Iowa any sort of label, you would almost have to call it a wrestling state, even though it's not one of the "big two" sports.

In a year like this, when Iowa clearly has the better football team and Iowa State is expected to have the much better basketball team, I expect to hear this refrain more frequently as we move into winter. But I can guarantee you this: If Iowa State manages to make it to the Dance, Iowa fan will be just as jealous this March as Iowa State fan was last January. Hawk fans and the sympathetic media won't convince me otherwise. They're not going to pee in my basketball cheerios before the season even starts.

Re: "We're a football state": A Convenient Refrain

Probably has more to do with the resurgence of the Iowa football program and how the Iowa basketball program has gone completely in the toilet. After all, the state of athletics in the state of Iowa solely rests on what Iowa does...

I would guess this statement is made because of the attendance numbers (and lack thereof) at Iowa in FB vs BB and not much else...

10 years ago we were considered a basketball state, but I think the demise of ISU and Iowa the past few years has diminished that view. Hopefully ISU's return to relevance will reverse that view.

I agree with the OP. I remember in the late 90's when it was all about basketball and "I don't really care that much about football". Now the tables have turned and you hear the exact same crap the other way. All basketball season they will just try and convince themselves it doesn't bother them, but you know that's a load.

How Iowa's fanbase has abandoned the basketball program to me is the most damning reason I think they are band-wagoning idiots. Iowa basketball was every bit as big growing up in the 80's/90's as football. Iowa basketball was appointment television growing up. Once the program began to fall in prominance the fanbase totally abandoned the program. I can think of no better reason to have zero respect for Iowa's fanbase. The same way Kirk Ferentz was a bum 13 months ago.

Iowa's basketball program began the road to it's slow death when they fired Tom Davis for basically no reason.

Iowa's program was already declining when they let Dr. Tom go. The real problem was the subsequent hire.

they got bored with full court presses, zone defense, and constant substitiutions when you get hot.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Football has always been #1 at UNI. Basketball has only started to make a real surge this decade, with the NCAA appearances and the new arena.

Exactly! They got what they deserve for canning a great basketball coach, the year he took the team to the Sweet 16.... and they haven't been back since, and don't look like they will anytime soon.

But hey, at least they succeeded in making it to the next level (down).

I'm not going to argue with you since you are a UNI fan but...are you serious? I didn't even know UNI had a football team growing up. The football team isn't even D1...of course UNI is a basketball school. It's the only sport that competes on a national scale.
