Does Cinci have a legitimate chance at playing in the NC?

    Cincinnati vs. USF - Recap - October 15, 2009 - College Football - SI.com

After watching Cinci roll over South Florida, my questions is: if the Bearcats run the table and go undefeated, do they have a legit chance of playing in the National Championship game? Should they at least be ranked higher and be more of a contender than Boise State?

The one thing they have going for them is that they do play in a BCS Conference (even though it is not a good one) but that is more than Boise State, Utah, or TCU can say.

If they run their schedule, they should. This team is legit and is loaded with playmakers. Kelly really seems to be one of the better coaches in the country as far as I'm concerned.

I think that Cinci is for real. They've shown me a lot already this year. I'm not going to sit here and act like a Bearcat expert but they have some serious players on that team. They deserve a shot if they run the table.

Re: Does Cinci have a legitimate chance at playing in the NC?

I think Cinci's chances are probably just a little bit better than Boise's, but not by much, the difference being that the Big East is a BCS conference where the WAC isn't. While they may be deserving, if it comes down to an undefeated Cinci versus a 1-loss Texas, Virginia Tech, etc., you know that Cinci's getting jumped.

It's kind of a shame, though, because as I keep hearing on the radio, Cincinnati may just be the best college football team in Ohio this year.

Re: Does Cinci have a legitimate chance at playing in the NC?

Teams that I think will definately get in over an undefeated Cinci:

    Undefeated Bama/Florida
    Undefeated Texas
    Undefeated Iowa
Undefeated Boise St if Oregon runs the table

Teams I think will have a pretty good shot:
1 loss Bama/Florida (as long as it doesn't create a rematch between Bama and Florida for the NC)

1 loss USC-people will give them credit for losing without their best player(Mays)or their starting quarterback and for their past BCS performances.

    1 loss Va Tech

1 loss Miami as long as Va Tech has two losses.

Teams that have no shot of getting picked over an undefeated Cinci:

Boise State unless Oregon runs the table

    1 loss Big 10 team

    1 loss Big 12 team

    Any two loss teams

Re: Does Cinci have a legitimate chance at playing in the NC?

Cincy will play for the NC if they are 1 of 2 or less undefeateds from a BCS conference. While the Big East isn't the toughest conferece they will have had to beat 2 other BCS schools(Oregon State and Illinois) to run the table. What they really need to hope for is that the good/respectable (Pitt and West Virginia)teams on their schedule keep winning as well. But I don't see them running the table, I think they are a really good team but they'll hit a snag. Looking at their remaining schedule, I see atleast 1 loss. They still play UCONN, WV, and Pitt. With Louisville and Illinois mixed in.

Re: Does Cinci have a legitimate chance at playing in the NC?

If Cincy wins out, they're in unless there are undefeated teams from both the SEC and Big 12. Especially if USF, Pitt, and WV all have decent finishes. Remember that a 1 loss WVU was locked into the national title in 2007, only to trip over their own two feet against Pitt. Why wouldn't an undefeated Cincy be in the same position.

Cincy has a far better shot than Boise. The only reason they might not make it is because they didn't start the season ranked in the Top 25, like WVU did in 2007. Just another raeson why polls shouldn't come out until week 4.

Neither Florida or Alabama will go undefeated as they more than likely will end up playing each other in the SEC championship game. Even then, it's very easy to see a scenario where they end up playing each other in the NC game, especially if their first meeting ends up being a close game.

After all, nobody would want to see Alabama get curb-stomped in a game where they had nothing to play for. Right?

I think Cincy's chance at the NC game is pretty close to nil. Right now in both of the polls that go into the BCS formula, they are behind Florida, Bama, Texas, VT, USC, Ohio State and Boise. Either Florida or Bama likely goes undefeated. They could easily jump Boise, but there are too many other teams to jump over. UT, VT, USC, and Ohio State would all have to lose, then they'd still have to worry about potentially being jumped by Iowa or Miami.

Not if they keep winning. The only reason for any of this, btw, is pre season rankings. If Cincy doesn't make the NC, it's just another reason to stop putting out effectual polls in the preseason.
