Odd question of the day...maybe year

Does anyone know if it's illegal to send venomous insects through the mail?

    Yes, it is.

But I'll correct myself, the post office in my building downtown does not allow animals to be shippded

    Mailing Live Animals
Customers shipping live animals must ensure all packaging requirements are met. Live animal shipments may be presented at any Post Office; however, the service standard may be affected depending on the availability of transportation from the drop-off site.

Customers sending Express Mail shipments containing live animals should expect a 2-3 day transport of their shipment. Shipping early in the week is suggested, and holiday weeks may have limited acceptance days and times. Express Mail postage will not be refunded unless the delivery or attempted delivery is more than three days after the day of mailing.

It begs the question; Why are you asking?

Re: Odd question of the day...maybe year

    Here's the deal:

My son (8) is a budding entomologist, and all of our friends know it. A friend in Montana found a black widow on her property. It's on its last leg (pun intended) and she asked if we would want it.

My inclination is that it would be OK to mail it if it's dead, but I'm not sure.

Dunno. Probably depends on who's receiving it.

Suggest you contact an entomoligist @ Georgia Tech. Or, Richmond.

I think that's okay, but I'd be little conerned about the venom with your boy messing with it even if it is dead?

I'm thinking I'm going to have to call the post office.

That should be a fun conversation.

Was she homeless or how'd she end up on your friend's property?

It was weird, she was walking around holding a red hourglass near her stomach. No idea about what happened to her husband.

A black widow in Montana? I didn't think they lived that far north.
