At the time they played ISU, easily. By the end of the year, far from.

IMO, the 2002 team that went 7-7 had more talent and was better than the 2000 team that went 9-3. In 2002, ISU was 6-1 and ranked #9 in the country with a win over eventual Big 11 Champion EIU on the road, a win over a ranked Nebraska team at home, and a close loss to #3 Florida State in KC. We got drilled at Oklahoma and went into a tailspin.

I would agree with this. I also think we are still trying to recover from that tailspin...

Haha. I am pretty sure in 2002 they were unaffiliated with the Big 10 and went around playing Oklahoma, LSU, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, Auburn, USC, Miami, Georgia, Florida State, and Texas. Too bad they couldn't pull the upset against ISU. They definitely deserved the championship...

    Enjoy.

I still blame the collapse in 2002 on the oline coach, Seneca could only do so much. I think we have just finally recovered from the Marty Fine years.

I have to think the 2000 DL would take the 2002 OL behind the woodshed. Three guys who played in the NFL going against Stubbe, Shelton and Menard? Mismatch city.

Re: In 2002 was Iowa state the

This is off-topic a little bit, but looking at those starting line-ups, the 2003 team had 15 returning starters from the previous year, plus the kicker, punter, and return specialists. I know we lost Seneca and there were some injuries (plus a really tough schedule), but it's still a little shocking to me that we managed to lose FIVE more games than we did in 2002.

I buy into this theory as well. A lot of people like to point to the 04 MU game and the 05 KU game as the missed opportunities to take the next step. I think that missed opportunity occured in the middle of the 2002 season. We had just come off back to back bowls. A 9 win season with a bowl win over pit and a 7 win season with a narrow loss to Bama. We were 5-1, ranked number 9 in the country, and Seneca was making early noise for the Heisman, and then we got smoked at OU and finished the season 7-7, and then we had 2003....

I actually don't think the turning point was that OU game, but the UT game that followed. That was a very close game where UT got a couple home cooking calls that really cost us. I think if we would have bounced back and pulled off that UT game, we wouldn't have had the collapse we had in the second half of that season. We lost a lot of games to teams we had no business losing to. If that team could have bounced back from that road trip, I think we had the talent for a 10 win season, a top tier bowl, and maybe a top 10 finish. The who knows what changes that could have lead to in the coming years. Of course we all know what really happened....
