The difference between Iowa and ISU

The difference between Iowa and ISU right now is that Iowa finds a way to win every close game and we find a way to lose them.

When ISU can turn single digit losses into single digit wins, we will have something. Look at Iowa this year. They beat UNI, Arkansas St, and Michigan by a COMBINED 6 total points!!! Had Iowa lost those 3 games by a combined total of 6 points instead, Iowa fans would be calling for KF's head right now.... guaranteed. Iowa would be 3-3 right now instead of
6-0. And had ISU won their last two close games.... they would be 5-1.

I realize I'm talking about "what if's" here, but the fact is, ISU is VERY close to being 5-1. The difference between being an average football team and a very good football team is finding a way to pull off those close ones.

This is only year one under Rhoads, Herman, and Burnham folks. I think we will close out these close games in the next few years. Keep the faith!

The difference? Iowa has margin for error because their defense is above average. Iowa State has no margin for error because their defense is freaking awful.

It's what happens as you overcome a losing culture. We'll start winning these games, too, and then it gets really fun!

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

Iowa was losing those games a few years ago. Iowa makes big plays on D, that is the difference.

Re: The difference between Iowa and ISU

This year, we all knew there would be bumps in the road with the new coaching staff and an under-talented roster.

Just think about how many guys from the offense are returning next year. All those returning starters with a full year of this system under their belts.

We lose some of our best guys on defense next year but that will give Wally a chance to sculpt the defensive roster to his liking.

Re: The difference between Iowa and ISU

the real difference is that iowas athletic budget is twice what isu's is and that allows iowa to field a winning football team like forever...

without money and a lot of it, you will never be a consistent winner in football...

was anyone here around the last time our clones won a conference championship?....didnt think so....

for every winning season at ames we always have 5 or so losing seasons...this has been going on for the last 50 years that I know of and its not gonna change without a large infusion of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kids, we're rebuilding and making adjustments. IF you would have told me Friday that we'd lose by 5 with a chance to win on Friday, I would have called you a liar. We're showing a lot of improvement.

Precisely. A few years ago, Iowa lost those close ones and they didn't even make a bowl game. The difference in most games comes down to making or not making one play here or there. One turnover less or one more created.

ISU is not light years away from winning football games... and Iowa is not light years better than anyone either. 6 points total in 3 wins for Iowa... are you kidding me? That is not dominating by any stretch of the imagination. But they are 6-0 instead of 3-3.

And yes, a great defense helps a ton. Although Iowa's defense got pounded at times last night. ISU had better hit the recruiting trail HARD for some big guys on the defensive side of the ball. I'm sick of hearing about another WR, DB, or athlete that we are recruiting. What about a stud DT or DE?

Re: The difference between Iowa and ISU

The difference is simple ... DEFENSIVE LINE

If you have one, you can win ... if you don't, you won't

It's the hardest position to recruit and develop ... look at ISU history, when we've had great defensive lines, we've went to bowl games

Difference is defense right now and luck. Sometimes you have to have luck to have a magical year...and right now Iowa is getting lucky.

    UNI (nough said)
Penn St (rain sure seemed to help Iowa)
Michigan (Forcier just drops ball, punt returner drops ball, Minor drops ball, and Robinson gives Greenwood a gift)

But Iowa takes advantage of those gifts. That is the difference. They know how to make a team pay and we do not

Re: The difference between Iowa and ISU

The difference between Iowa and Iowa State is they've had a stable coaching staff for a decade, while we're on our third coaching staff in four years. But considering what Rhoads has done this year so far, although we haven't won as much as we'd like, I'd say our future looks bright.

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Luck has nothing to do with it. When talent meets opportunity, that is the definition of luck. Iowa has the talent, ISU does not, especially on defense. Iowa has margin for error, ISU does not. Iowa can rush 4 and get pressure on the QB while ISU has to rush 5 or 6, not good. ISU has equal or better talent than Iowa most years at every position except Offensive and Defensive lines. That is the difference most years. If ISU can solve that problem, they'll be going to bowl games again.

The difference between ISU and Iowa is we are on Versus and they are on major network on Saturday night and Brent Musburger has a love affair for the hawks.

Re: The difference between Iowa and ISU

we've gotta give PR and co time to get there. Go back and look at the record in KF's first couple years. The kind of improvement we're seeing week over week is promising.

The biggest problem that occurs is that our schedule will be a ***** the next couple years. Im betting on PR's breakout season being the 2012 season.
