    defense

i am probably going to get shot for this, but if we had the pressure from the front 4 like iowa gets, we might be undefeated. think about it! yesterday for example, we wouldnt have to blitz LB's and they could have been back in coverage more. and KU wouldnt have 10 seconds in the pocket. against iowa...... it would have been atleast a closer game. some of austin's picks resulted in tipped passes and 7 guys in coverage. iowa's front 4 are pretty darn good and if you disagree.......... you drank to much koolaid and vodka last night.!!!!!

    Re: defense

Recruiting to the DL is the toughest task in FB. There just aren't as many prospects and most get swallowed by the elite programs.

We need an upgrade in the worst way, but it is a tall task for us.

Michigan will be the beast of the B10 in no time. I couldn't be happier. Iowa barely beat them with one of their best teams in years, at home, against 2 frosh QBs.

I just root for more B10 teams to be good so Iowa doesn't cakewalk through the schedule anytime soon. Plus my Dad went to Michigan and I need a team to root for in addition to ISU for mental purposes.

Iowa has done a great job of recruiting TEs and turning them into DL. The ISU DL recruiting has been horrible for the last 4 years. The good thing is that even though it would take years to get to the Iowa level, just a couple of DL that can speed rush would make the ISU defense much better. Wally has his work cut out for him.

    Re: defense

Iowa was +4 in turnover margin (most of which were unforced gifts) against Michigan and won by 2 points. Those breaks won't always go their way.

Heck, they've been more lucky than good this year -- half their wins (UNI, Arkansas State, and Michigan) were decided in the final seconds. Last year when they lost close games all we heard was whining that they were better than the teams that were beating them. Why don't we hear anything about that this year?

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

I agree with you about Michigan being a beast. I think thast Rich will have this team in the National title hunt in less than 5 years. This guy can recruit and this same pattern happened when he was in W. Virginia. They werent good there first year only winning (I think only winning three games), similar to Michigan. And then about the the 3rd and 4th years is when they got on top and started being a threat in the FBS. Michigan already has the name, so they already have that working for them and with a great coach they will get it done again.

    Re: defense

We definitely need the DL to step up and in a big way. Kind of disheartening to see Neal beating out Maggitt for the other DE spot and Laing doesn't play. Lyle is a solid player.

Looks like they've got a bit of a rotation with Frere and Rump, and Alburtis and Johnson on the inside. Was kind of hoping Jerrod Black would step up and be at least a rotational player for us.

I would like to see us take a look at Hammerschmit as a DE. I think he has some of the size and athleticism we need there.

    Re: defense

we just need to find faster athletes to put on defense

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Me and a buddy of mine were talking about this last night. Our front 7 is not very fast and really aren't that athletic. We need to go after guys that have speed and athleticism. You can't teach those things. What you can teach is fundamentals. Go after some guys that aren't being recruited very highly with speed and them teach them the DE or DT spots

We are really missing Rashawn Parker. I was at the game in Lawrence yesterday, and even when we brought Smith and Benton on a blitz, we still could not get there.

    Re: defense

You can rip me if you want but Neal isn't a Big 12 D-Lineman! Im sure he has got heart and plays hard but he doesnt have the talent. And our linebackers are decent run stoppers but are terrible at coverage. If you watch closely at the game yesterday...our linebackers couldn't stay with the receivers!

This is what happens in most cases...that's the point of the spread, create mismatches and use the entire field.
