    Chizik Good Fit At Auburn

I hate the man as much as anybody and I don't think he's a great coach by any means, but am I the old one that thinks he fits the needs of an Auburn coach incredibly well?

His success right now, and probably always will be, is built around the great coordinators he has on staff. However, part of being a good coach is keeping good assitsants around you to make up for your negatives. While Chiz certainly isn't a good coach, he's done a good job of rallying the players, bringing in great assitants and working the pr angles perfectly.

At Auburn, you're an elite program that is shadowed by some even more elite programs. In order to stand out, you need a coach that is more PR and more swaggarish than you would need in say the midwest or at other truley elite programs. If you have great assistants and can recruit to the school's strengths, the head coach doesn't need to be great.

I hate the guy but long-term I can see this being a great fit there if they can continue to build and recruit over the next year or two without any huge lows.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

    That is true...

But how good of a coach do you have to be to go 5-0 at Auburn?... his offensive coaches were career savers for him.

Lets see how he does vs the top of the SEC.

That's my point though, in certain situations the head coach doesn't need to be the x's and o's guy in order to have success. A lot of it depends on how they can continue to score at will behind Gus M.

It is amazing how he went from possibly the hardest place to coach in the country to one of easiest. I've said it before, all he has to do there is hire great assistants and be a salesman to recruits. He'll do very well as long as he has the good coordinators.

Re: Chizik Good Fit At Auburn

He fits in very well in the SEC. That conference is full of arrogant, slimy, no character people. Gene fits the bill tremendously. All that matters to Gene Chizik is Gene Chizik. He proved that in Ames. The difference is that at Auburn they gave him blank checks to go out and get the best coordinators he could find.

Good luck to the slimeball.... and good riddance. Auburn did us a HUGE favor by taking him off our hands IMO. Paul Rhoads just oozes class and respectability. That fits our program much better.

Re: Chizik Good Fit At Auburn

Auburn isn't an easy job by any means. Your second fiddle in your own state and face an uphill battle against LSU and Alabama in division. The only positive is you get Miss St and Ole Miss every year and Ole Miss might be getting better...

Even at Auburn, he will never have one of the more talented teams in the conference... Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and LSU will always have more talent.

Still is much easier than Iowa State.

maybe easier to win non conference games, but much harder to get to a conference championship game.

He's already beaten Tennessee, but I think Tennessee will be MUCH improved in the coming years as Kiffin is raking in the recruits.

But you're right, I don't know if he'll ever be better than Florida, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, or maybe even Ole Miss. It's going to be a matter of how happy the Auburn people are at going to minor bowl games every year? If that isn't good enough for them, then I'm not sure Chizik can get them where they want to go?

That pretty much sums it up, Tuberville got in trouble when he started losing his coordinators, oh and any Auburns coach's fate will be decided that last game of the year in the Iron Bowl.

For his sake, he needs to do well in the SEC or else all the love will start to change and then he'll have one more year to prove himself.

Re: Chizik Good Fit At Auburn

I think Auburn may be one of the only teams in the country that casual football fans could name Auburn's OC more than the actual head coach. Malzahn has been getting a ton of press and praise and Chizik seems to be like Waldo - he's there on the sideline if you look hard for him. If Auburn wins only 6-7 games a year for the next couple of seasons Chizik could actually be safe because the blame could be placed on the hype of Malzahn whereas any other coach in the SEC would be shown the door. Chizik is a good fit in the SEC - recruit talent, get coordinators who are motivators, shake hands and schmooze with the boosters, and then step back and watch everything else unfold. It may sound weasely, but with Petrino doing the same thing at Arkansas it looks to be the trend in SEC head coaches.

What if we get an Iowa vs. Auburn matchup in a bowl game this year? Who are you rooting for?
