    Re: Midyear Tuition Hikes Possible

I love how a 10% cut translates to a 10% "cost of living" increase for me. I'm not saying it isn't necessary, I'm just tired of picking up the slack. We already pay enough in taxes. Start managing it better!!! Rant over.

How much do you pay in taxes? If you are a student it is probably very little.

I'm not a student. I graduated some time ago from Iowa State. Your point is taken because this possible tuition increase does not effect me, however, the possible property tax increase does. My wife is also a state employee (teacher).

    Re: Midyear Tuition Hikes Possible

Color me not shocked. This doesn't even account for differential tuition, and the College of Business is spending money it doesn't apparently have considering they keep hiking tuition to do stupid **** like expand the cafe. God damnit the people in charge **** me off. It's not a fluke students at Iowa's public universities have the highest average debt of any public universities in the country. The mismanagement of money is absolutely disgusting.

I may be mistaken, but I think the Cafe's are owned by the Food Services and not by the individual colleges that these are placed in.

There is a ton of waste on campus though. Look at the computers. Brand new every year or every other year. $2000 mac systems in english labs used 99% of the time for word processing. Teachers with $2-3k computers, when a $500-1000 system would be more than adequate. I had a friend in IT tell me about how the dept of admissions always got new PCs either every year or every other year.. and they dont work on anything much more advanced than a console program. Millions in wasted IT spending all over campus.

And then there's the snow brushes\polishers.. why do they even use those, much less why did they pay for them.

I believe it's all funded by the general fund, from which they're spending money they don't have. Don't have enough money -> Up tuition/dining costs/housing costs. At what point does it stop? The BoR doesn't care an ounce. The GSB can't do squat about it. Looking at the tuition increase percentages vs. COLA is disgusting. If I remember right from the Daily, the cost of tuition since 2000 or thereabouts has nearly doubled.

I pay a $100+ fee for computers in Gerdin for 1,800 pages on garbage computers in the main lab. 1,800 pages + the cost of ink is nowhere NEAR $100+. 1117 Gerdin now has new Dell computers with the CPU embedded in the screen. Why? It's a complete waste of money. Is it nice? Yes. The computers are still slower than squat.

Why does Gerdin's cafe need to be expanded? If you want something, walk across the street and go to the MU. When you're in a money crunch, spending more to "solve" a "problem" that really doesn't exist is just plain stupid. Is the MU C-Store busy? Yes, but if you can't wait 5 minutes MAX for service, bring something with you and the problem is gone!

In regards to total spending, outsourcing e-mail was the best decision they've made in forever. Now if they'd just pull their heads out and cut some of the waste spending other places on campus...

There are very few labs on campus which need 24" LCD monitors, if any at all. Why does Iowa State all of the sudden care about landscaping everything (like Carver which was just previously done). The College of Business cut back on the janitorial staff. God forbid professors have to dump out their own garbage!

Property taxes will not be raised...hopefully. Culver won't allow schools to raise property taxes, they have to pull from their reserves.
