Gator Bowl to get SEC vs Big 10 matchup

The Gator Bowl will join the SEC bowl lineup beginning in the 2010 season, giving the SEC three New Year's Day matchups against the Big Ten in Florida. Gator Bowl chairman Dan Murphy confirmed Wednesday to The Jacksonville Times-Union the deal with the SEC. That could have ramifications for Birmingham's Papajohns.com Bowl, which has been trying to move up a slot in the SEC pecking order. Meanwhile, the Independence Bowl is out of the SEC bowl lineup after 15 years as a partner. The Independence Bowl appears headed toward an ACC-Mountain West pairing.

But they are such a great conference, they deserve 4 New Year's Bowls!

I guess I'll take that as a shot at the Big 10, whatever. I don't really care about the Jan. 1 thing, the way bowl dates have been shuffled around have made when they're played pretty much irrelevant. I just like the stature and tradition of these bowls, and matching up with the SEC in all of them but the Rose.

Is that because 8 outta 12 SEC teams are over rated?

Dont forget that the Alamo might be moving to a New Years date.

Iowa's 3-1 this decade against the big bad SEC in bowl games, so I'll take as many of those matchups as we can get.

Great bowl lineup for the Big 10.
My first thought was "Why would the SEC want that many Big 11 matchups?". But of course, the answer is that they are usually easy wins. For the most part, they are usually boring games to watch too. Funny, that makes 36% of Big 11 teams playing on NYD (or after) games. And if two teams make the BCS, that's 45%. With as bad as that conference has been lately, if that doesn't diminish what a NYD bowl means these days, I don't know what does.

It just proves what Bowls are after. The cash. It means a lot to the economy to drag a north team down south to play. It's one reason I never understood Texas' infatuation with getting their teams in Texas Bowl games. Wouldn't you rather have people that are going to make a vacation of it, in town for at least 3 days to a week as opposed to people who are going to drive up for the night?

Maybe the Texas teams are focused on winning their bowl games...

Gotta say it's funny to see a follower of a program who's biggest claim-to-bowl-fame is a Peach Bowl appearance in 1977 talking garbage about bowl games. No offense, but I don't really see how ISU is in a position to bang on other teams' and conferences' performance in bowls.

To your point, since the 2000 season, the Big 10 and SEC have played against each other 24 times in bowl games. The SEC has won 13, the Big 10 has won 11. Out of all those games, 12 were decided by double-digits, with the SEC taking 7 and the Big 10 winning 5.

Edge, SEC. But "usually easy wins" for the SEC, as you put it? Hardly.

The SEC has hardly dominated the Big 10 in the Capital One bowl and Outback. I believe the Big 10 has won 4 out of the last 5 in the Cap1. The Outback has been pretty back and forth. And the Capital One bowl has been anything but boring this decade.

In the case of Iowa, thats a good question, as Iowa's ownage of the SEC is well documented.

I would hope a #4 team in the Big 10 could beat the #7 team in just about any conference.
