Local DM Radio: An Honest Critique

The discussion of the Out of Bounds show got me thinking about this and I thought it deserved its own thread. So here goes...

Let me sum up Des Moines' radio sport personalities for you here and now:

    KXNO:

Jon Miller: Kind of a tool and obviously a hawk homer, but at least he brings up some valid points now and then. Knowledgedable in college football & wrestling...and sort of basketball. Still a tool though.

Steve Deace: That being said, he knows his college football better than anyone in this market and if he committed himself to it, probably better than most of the national pundits. More concerned with damning the sins of all others though and spreading the gospel of Steve.

Matt Perault: Not as bad as I originally thought. Makes some wild accusations and still think he has terrible chemistry with Miller. Sounds like he has a mild speech impediment as well. God save us if the Red Sox win the World Series, though.

Ken Miller: He's okay but his Stanzi-hard on has made me lose a lot of the little respect I had for him. Ken is your classic side kick. Can't carry a show by himself and too middle of the road to really rag on.

    1700

Andy Garmin: I freaking hate him. Awful radio voice. No personality and brings virtually nothing in substance. Knowledgeable on very little, but vocal on most things. Not a good combo. He sucks on TV and he sucks in the radio booth.

Round Guy: Dude, stick to your morning show on KGGO. You don't belong in the radio booth anymore than I belong in the Playboy mansion. Stick to what you're good at; stuffing your fat face and cracking jokes with Lou & Heather.

Larry Cotlar: Surprisingly, he's the jewel of Out of Bounds. I don't mind Cotlar that much, but his interview with Rick Pitino last winter will forever go down as the worst interview I've ever heard, and I used to watch MTV News with Kurt Loder. Cotman, nobody cares about Drake basketball...not even in Des Moines. Deal with it.

Marty Tirrell: Marty is what he is. You take the good with the bad. He's entertaining and maddening all at once. He has charisma, but he also has no clue. I've really come to appreciate him more now that I listen to that 3-hour tension fest that is Matt & Miller. He needs to dump that loser he pairs up with though. Seriously, is that a former bartender that Marty owes an outrageous tab to or something? Why is that guy on the radio?

Edit: I've never listened to Keith & Andy on the radio, so I have no critique of them. I enjoy Sound-off though...sometimes.

I've honestly never heard the show. I meant to put something in there about that, but I forgot. I can't comment though because I'm always at work during their show and have never even heard a lick of it.

Re: Local DM Radio: An Honest Critique

What about Andy Fales and Keith Murphy?

Cotlar talks to fast and interrupts a lot. It seems to me like Garman and RG don't really like him, comes off that way anyway. Cotlar is only good for connections. I quit listening to this show a while ago.

I like Deace and Miller together, Miller needs Deace and seems to rely on him, often letting him go on and on. Their show isn't bad compared to the others in the market. I don't care for Deace's politics, but I agree he makes a good argument.

I think Fales and Murphy are funny together. Not a bad show, but not really sporty enough for me.

Miller needs Deace so much. It pretty clear Jon preps the show everyday and Deace shows up and opens his mouth. Deace knows his football, but that show needs a basketball guru to fill in for Deace once football season is over.
    Anyone could do Miller's job..anyone!

I've said this before, but some of you guys could tell KxNO who you want, they would do it and you'd STILL complain.

Politics and beliefs aside, Deace is hands down the best out of all of them. He is articulate and you can tell he does his homework, no matter the subject. I wish he did a morning sports show.

It's a thankless job. You're a mod. You should understand this better than anyone.

Re: Local DM Radio: An Honest Critique

Listening to Murphy and Fales on the radio is like sitting down at the barstool to listen in to some random guys talking about anything and everything, and I kind of enjoy that. If you listen for anything more, you will be disappointed.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Be thankful. If Andy was half as funny as he thinks he is he would approach being funny. Murph is ok but neither of them have much sports knowledge or insight. Almost makes me miss Marty...ok maybe not.

If you think this would be a good idea you should check out 1460AM, I heard they have a show called Miller & Deace from 6-8am.

Pretty sure he was making a joke. You know, Deace talks politics so much that sports get tossed to the side.

I listen to the show most mornings from about 7:15 on and I really don't think he talks politics very much and if he does start Miller ussually pulls him back on track.
