    Battle of 60th street

any of you guys going to this high school football game? Its between Valley and Waukee. Both teams are 4-2. Waukee lost to Ames by 10, who Valley beat by 20, but thats not to say it won't be a good game. Waukee almost beat them last year and its in Waukee this year.

I've been kind of following this game the past couple of years because I have always been interested to see if it would develop into a rivalry. It is almost as if Waukee is a miniature clone of Valley

I like the name for this "rivalry". Isn't Waukee now the 2nd largest school district in the state (after Valley)? This matchup has the potential to just keep getting bigger and bigger.

    Re: Battle of 60th street

According to numbers from '08-'09School year (most recent I could find)
    Valley has the Largest
    Followed by:
    Lincoln
    East
    Davenport West
    ANkeny
    CR Kennedy
    DBQ Hempstead
    IC West
    Linn Mar
    SEP
Waukee comes in at #35. I know they have grown since then but I doubt so much that they are now #2

The younger classes are Valley size and growing rapidly but the current 9-12 is still middle size for 4A.

This will definitely be a huge rivalry for years to come.

I can't imagine Waukee is the 2nd largest. Not too long ago they were 3A.

9-12 actually very small for 4A. Surprised they are competing as well as they are already.

Marshalltown vs. Ames are pretty big rivals, and it goes back to the 60's and 70's when Mtown and Ames won titles back and forth every year in boys bball. It was reborn in 2008 when Mtown knocked off Harrison Barnes and the Little Cyclones in bball.

They play in football this Friday and thats where my attention will be.

Yeah, in time, they will get to be the size of the rest... huge difference between the graduating classes and the kindergarten ones in size.

Waukee probably isnt hurting in the money department, which helps. I mean after they finish building the replacement for waukee elementary, they wont have a single building older than about 15 years old.

I believe the kindergarten class in Waukee is around 600 this year.

There was a reason I asked the question. My gf said they ran track against Waukee as a 2A school back in 2003. Maybe the figure I heard was talking about K-12 rather than 9-12 (which is all that matters for sports classification). It doesn't surprise me that they are small-mid 4A since it's 9-12 that goes into that equation.

I believe that the "border", or at least that part of Dallas county that hadn't been annexed yet was actually 74th St. West Des Moines goes a lot further west than 60th St.

924 in 9-12 right now so there is a lot of growth that is gong to happen.
My bet is that Waukee splits similar to Ankeny by the time this year's kindergartners graduate.

West Des Moines does go a lot further west than 60th St. and it's going to continue to annex land all the way to Van Meter, but the school districts are independent of city limits. They were drawn a long time ago and the city limits have grown into them. I believe that Waukee School District extends all the way to the Dallas/Polk line and includes parts of Waukee, Urbandale, Clive, and WDM. Hell, there are Waukee elementary schools in the city limits of U-dale, Clive, and WDM.

    Re: Battle of 60th street

As a Waukee alum, it's kind of crazy to see the Warriors in a game of this magnitude in 4A. I was hoping for their sake they were able to beat Ames last week to give it some extra juice, but props to the Little Cyclones and their bold move to switch QB's and get the win.

But, it seems Waukee has come a long way from when I, and others in this thread , were walking the halls. And to think they will only get bigger and better.

Should be a packed house on Friday night.
