Would Comcast buying NBC Universal accelerate the creation of a Big 12 network?

This is an interesting blog entry about the possible outcomes of a Comcast/NBC Universal merger.

    A few thoughts:

-ESPN has put a lot of money into MNF, I'd be surprised if they let anyone outbid them when the contract comes up.

-Versus might see increased coverage nationwide if it is boosted by NBC. This would be great for the NHL, since their TV contract is awful right now.

There is no way that the NFL will allow MNF to be on Versus. There was enough of an uproar about it being on ESPN. Also, with ND's ratings in the tank what's the chances that NBC/Comcast would go to the Big12 and offer to renegotiate their FoxSports contract early and start showing some Big12 games on NBC? I know that ESPN and ABC gobble up the big ones, but maybe they make an agreement that for now NBC will play some of the games that would be shown on FSN and show multiple big games once the ESPN contract is up.

If Comcast/NBC did go after MNF, they could put it back on OTA TV on a primary or secondary HD channel.

Have you seen any ratings for Notre Dame FB this year? I think they have been up a little bit for a couple of the games this year.

I don't know what's going to happen with our television contracts, but something needs to.

As long as Texas and Oklahoma are the teams on top of the Big 12 totem-pole not a lot is going to change for TV coverage. The North Champion needs to start winning the Big 12 title game and get the power to balance between both divisions instead of in favor of the B12 South - teams like Missouri and Kansas don't have the reputation (yet) to make it plausible for a Big 12 network.

Notre Dame agrees to five-year extension with NBC - College Football - ESPN

This was from last year when they signed a new contract, but it shows that the ND TV ratings were at an all time low. I know that they have improved some this year with a better team, but unless they return to their past they will continue to decline in the long run. Also, ND only plays at home so many times during the season and NBC doesn't show their away games. Also even when ND is home that is only 1 time slot out of 3 or 4 possibilities. Also, a Saturday night game to compete with ABC might be intriguing.

Eh, that's not really necessary. You just need a conference interested in competition among the schools.

I don't see them doing that. ESPN/ABC could do that now, but they don't because they want everyone to subscribe to ESPN. I assume Comcast would want to do the same.

Also, the secondary channels are usually affiliated with a different network (i.e. 5.2 in Des Moines in a RTV affiliate, 8.2 is an AccuWeather affiliate). NBC or ABC only has "control" of the primary channel.
