    Rec Softball

Just curious how many of you here play rec softball. Men's, co-rec, etc.? Where do you play, how many times a week, etc? Getting about that time where registrations will be due soon so I'm getting the itch to play again.

Last year I was playing 4 nights a week at one point but usually 3 nights when seasons weren't overlapping and just 2 by late August. Usually play out at Clive but played in WDM at times too. I really didn't get that much into it until I played on a work league team and now I've taken over a good chunk of the planning for that league as well as managing 3 different league teams this year and playing on another. It's a fun hobby and now I find myself researching different brands and models of bats and balls that some of the really good teams we've played against use hoping to gain an edge possibly. A few years ago I would have thought a bat was just a bat and made no difference but now I know why some of them run around $300 because a $30 bat from Target is definately not the same!

4 nights of softball a week? You have more free time than ISU22!

    Re: Rec Softball

I used to play in the Des Moines city league, Co-Rec, they play most of their games over in Altoona at the des moines softball complex. Good time, some teams are a little hardcore for me though.

I play once a week at The Sands in a co-ed league. LOTS of fun, no losers arguing with umps, and over priced beer to boot!

    Re: Rec Softball

I played some beer league softball during college. It's been a few years, but I'm thinking of playing this summer with some co-workers.

I love seeing all the guys who go all out with their uniforms and equipment. That's always good for a laugh or two.

Well 4 nights for month of July basically when some seasons overlap. The rest of the months usually only 2 or 3 teams going at the same time.

The nice thing is my girlfriend plays too as she used to be a college softball player so not only is it great to have a good female player on our co-rec teams but also is something we can do together. We mostly play at Clive where it's semi-competitive. Some good teams there that may get a little too into it but also a fair ammount of teams that are just there for fun so we usually fall right outside of the top few teams in the standings because we can usually play with anyone in the league but never quite have enough to win enough to win the league. Plus Clive allows you to bring your own beer to the park so usually get some pre and post game socializing in as well.

    Re: Rec Softball

I play competitively in WDM at Raccoon River Park. I prefer to play hard and play with people who want to win. I do not enjoy co-ed/beer league at all. I play with a lot of former baseball players so we like to get the blood flowing still.

    Re: Rec Softball

Don't get me wrong I like a little competitiveness myself. I just don't like playing the teams that take it too seriously and make a fuss whenever something doesn't go their way or is overly cocky about how good they are.

You can still find competitiveness in co-rec leagues though, you just have to find the right league but you usually are going to find a few teams ins some leagues that didn't realize what they were getting into that struggle to get a win or 2. We've played some pretty tough teams the past few years and I would not call the teams I play with a bad team just in it for fun. We like to win and usually have a few college softball players and some that played in HS in the mix along with some guys that also play in 1 or 2 men's leagues.

I guess it just depends on what you like but its 1 thing to be good and win but its even more fun to have good players that are fun to play with and don't make it a downer when you are having a rough night.

    Re: Rec Softball

Completely agree. All the guys I play with have a great time and we are definitely not the "hot tempered guys" team. We just prefer to play as hard as we can.

I used to play at the sands. They have (had) the absolute worst fields. Come July, those infields were like playng on asphalt. All the little dips and valleys in the outfield were fun as well.

Let me know when you need another player....

I played in one a year and a half ago that was for the city of Des Moines over by Altoona until I get hit in the hand/face with the softball.
