    History of ISU Missed Kicks

We've had some very reliable kickers miss at key moments:

    1. 1972 Nebraska 23-23 tie .

Tom Goedjen - Probably ISU's most reliable kicker and the probably biggest heartbreaking loss in ISU history. I think He still holds the record for most consecutive PATs at 50. Nebraska was the National Champ in '71 and we had them on the ropes. With time expiring, ISU scores a TD. The ONLY PAT miss is Goedjen's career just happened to be this one.

    2. 1977 Iowa. 12-10 Loss.

The biggest hyped game in the series with Iowa because this was the first game after a 34-year hiatus. Neither team moved the ball much because of starting Freshman QB's. ISU's only TD was a punt return. But midway through the 4th Quarter, we moved into Iowa territory and set up for a Scott Coleman FG from 43 yards. Wide Left.

    3. 1981 Oklahoma 7-7 tie

Until this game, we hadn't beaten OU in Norman in something like 25-years; our longest road-loss of any B8 team... Alex Giffords was probably the most talented kicker ever for the Cyclones (Ty Stewart & Goedjen right up there).
With time running downt, ISU moved the ball down to the 7-yard line, where the drive stalled.

For Giffords, who holds the ISU record for the longest FG (58-yards), this was a Pitching Wedge... And he missed it.

ISU held OU to a 3-and-out and got the ball back at mid-field. with 1 second remaining, Giffords got one more shot - a 59 yarder. It had the distance, but was wide.

    4. 2004 Missouri. 17-14
This game didn't need to go to Overtime. Only had to hit a a 24-yarder to win our first conference championship since God as a little boy.

    5. 2005 Kansas
    Another over time loss.

You forgot the worst one. The Tony Yelk game against Bama. 2-5 kicking that day and missed the 47 yarder over the post. What made it worse was that we kicked the **** out of them all game but just couldn't score

Don't forget Yelk's miss against Alabama. While it wasn't for a conference championship, it was for a bowl win.

Thanks - and for the sake of posterity; I'll go back and edit.

Re: History of ISU Missed Kicks

    You forgot:

2001 @ Texas A&M - Freshman Tony Yelk misses all 4 field goal attempts in a 24-21 loss. Seneca had 350 passing yards that day, too.

2001 vs Alabama - Yelk makes good on only 2 of 5 attempts - including his "miss" as time expires in a 14-13 loss.

2004 @ Colorado - Freshman Brian Jansen misses two short FGs and our offense fails on 5 trips in the Colorado 20. We lose 19-14. Oh, and we can't make a 19-yard field goal, but Mason Crosby can hit from 54 and 60 yards (was 4 for 4 on the day) in the same game. FML.

2005 @ Missouri - After all the hosing that led to this dissolution of our 24-14 lead in the fourth quarter, we somehow end up in overtime and have first possession. We run three plays that gain no yards and keep the ball on the left hash. Predictably, Culbertson misses a 43-yard kick. Missouri then has possession and runs three plays, but towards the middle of the damn field (whoddathunk?), so that their kicker only has to kick it straight. It's good and. Another epic bed-******** 4th quarter meltdown.

Yeah, what made that one really bad is that he made it. At least if you go by the rulebook.

What about last season at Iowa? Cyclones dominate the game between the 20's for 3 quarters and Mahoney has a bad day.

Re: History of ISU Missed Kicks

I have a hard time blaming the kicker for this week's loss. If you look at the replay the kick was straight. Sometimes good kicks still get blocked. Unfortunately for us we were on the wrong end of a good game. Some credit needs to be given to the KSU guy that got his hand up there.

I agree completely - the kick did not look low to me. The KSU guy just made a freak play.

Re: History of ISU Missed Kicks

What is weird for me is that when I started following ISU, they had James McMillion (return man) and Ty Stewart on special teams, then we had Kohl. Kicking was very solid in the 90's. Gomez was solid later.
