Thursday Night Kickoff vs. Kent State

guess if this is what the students wanted,, i made it up in the second quarter last year, and i did 90 all the way up.. so ill be late again this year..

AMES, Iowa – The Gene Chizik era will begin under the lights at Jack Trice Stadium when the 2007 Iowa State football team hosts Kent State on Thursday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

This will be the second year in a row that the Cyclones will open the season with a Thursday night contest and the success of last year’s triple overtime victory provided much of the impetus for a repeat.

"Our students were really energized last year and their enthusiasm for the pre-holiday weekday game convinced us to explore doing it again this fall," Iowa State University Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. "Our conversations with students showed their strong desire for the football game to be played before the Labor Day weekend."

Pollard anticipates another great environment for the Kent State game.

"There will be a great anticipation for the Kent State game for several reasons, including it being the season opener, one of the college football season’s first games and Coach Chizik’s debut," Pollard said.

Pollard acknowledged that weekday games do present some challenges for the campus, community and fans that travel great distances, and the department appreciates the willingness of many individuals to work together in working through the challenges.

"The strong, cooperative spirit among faculty, staff, students, the Ames community and our fans helped last year’s Thursday evening game be very successful," Pollard said. "Playing a game on a weekday causes challenges, but a collaborative and cooperative effort, mixed in with good patience and Cyclone spirit, can make this type of game very special to a campus community."

I like the Thursday night opener. It frees up travel plans for the weekend. I don't think they should do it for any other games though, because a lot of people wouldn't be able to travel to the game. I like it for the opener though.

Let's hope that it doesn't take 3OT's this year to knock off an inferior team.

Will the game be on ESPN? Otherwise, why bother with a Thursday night game? I won't be there. I hate night games because of the three hour drive. In fact, that's the reason I haven't renewed my season tickets. I prefer Saturday afternoon games.

You haven't renewed your tickets because one game is scheduled for a Thursday night? Missing a game against Kent State is a big enough deal to warrant missing the entire season? I wouldn't think it would be such an all-or-nothing affair...

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

No kidding. It's not like this is last minute. Plan ahead. Make it so it's going to be a fun weekend rather than a weekend. For crying out loud we get to see our beloved clones play 2 days earlier than if it was a saturday!

Yea, I get that this is the majority vote for NCC members. However, I think they do the Labor Day weekend Night Game more for the students. I love night games. I get to wake up at noon, roll on over to the lots, barbecue, booze, and then walk into JTS as the sun is setting behind the pressbox. I think if us students can modify our part-time work schedules to make saturday games, most NCC members can fanagle a way to make a Thursday Night game.

Re: Thursday Night Kickoff vs. Kent State

I actually wanted the Game on Saturday. For those of us who have to drive two hours plus to the game, it means taking the afternoon off midweek to tailgate. Not to mention the two plus hours drive home after the game, hence it is not an enjoyable experience. I thought the game would have been a bigger sellout if it had been on a Saturday afternoon last year.

Re: Thursday Night Kickoff vs. Kent State

I don't understand Pollard on this one. Last year for Toledo we had an attendance of around 42,500 on the Thursday Night game August 31,2006. On Sept. 9, 2006 we drew over 3,000 MORE fans for our Saturday game versus UNLV. I think if we kept the game on the Saturday it is a sure sellout. Maybe Pollard has plans for the weekend and wants to get out of town.
