    Formatting Hard Drive

I'm re-formatting an old lap top. I have no idea what I'm doing but I'll figure it out. Anyone got any recommendations on operating systems that don't cost any money? Is Ubuntu any good? All I want for this old laptop is internet capability and the ability to use Microsoft Word or similar microsoft word program. Don't want anything else.

With ubuntu and open office, you can do most anything you could do with MS office. It is not as easy to learn as windows, but it will be totally free.

That's what I did. Comes with Open Office - a free MS Office replacement.

Everything except a good replacement for the full version of outlook.

good to know. I have one computer that I use for work that has outlook, this other computer is just for fun.

With Obuntu can you do video games and such?

    It depends

(On what games you're talking about and how much work you would want to go through to get your existing games to work)

You just might need to drink some wine to make it go (www.winehq.org)

Adding - the only issue with a linux equivalent to Outlook is that there is no real good replacement for it on the corporate desktop.

For home users, Thunderbird and other open source e-mail applications are just fine.

So, what's with this Open Office being free, thing? On OpenOffice.org, they charge an annual fee for download "privileges". How is that "free" exactly?

    Re: Formatting Hard Drive

Phaedrus, I downloaded Open Office onto my laptop from this address:
    OpenOffice Download

There was no download fee or other fees of any type. I am not a student and prefer to keep my computer legal so I tend to look for freeware and open source software that works. Open Office has been a very pleasant surprise. It works so well that I would not even consider paying for Microsoft Office.

I use Thunderbird as my email client. Firefox is my primary browser. I am delighted them also. Because I am not a "gamer", the Mozilla software works very well for me. And go ahead and laugh because yes, I still prefer XP as my favorite operating system.

I just checked and this is an incorrect statement. Open Office can be downloaded free of charge from OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite.

And if you want to discuss the "free" nature of open source software, it's not just measured in the cost of the product.

    Thanks for the link!

If you Google "open office" you get a butt-load of sites that charge for the privilege of downloading it. But evidently, your link took me right to a free download.
