    D league announcement

    D League annoucement
    http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pb.../SPORTS&lead=1

A group of area businessmen is expected to announce Tuesday that it has received National Basketball Association approval for a Des Moines franchise in the NBA Development League.

NBA officials are scheduled to attend a news conference to be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines.

Jerry Crawford, a Des Moines lawyer and a member of the investment group, said that the news conference would "be a major sports announcement for Des Moines."

The club, which will be the 15th team in the NBA D-League, is expected to begin a 50-game schedule next November and will play its home games in Wells Fargo Arena. The 25-game home schedule will be played from November to April.

The yet-to-be named basketball team is the second professional minor-league sports tenant to play in Wells Fargo Arena. The Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League are in their second season.

In addition, officials for the Arena Football League said last week that Des Moines will have a franchise playing in arenafootball2, the American Football League's 30-team minor league, beginning in 2008 at Wells Fargo.

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

    Re: D league announcement

Any ideas on what the name for the basketball team should be?

I wonder if they are going to call the ALF2 team the Iowa Barnstormers?

Will they still be the Barnstormers if they are playing in Wells Fargo Arena?

I am pretty sure when the Barnstormers left to become the NY Dragons,
Des Moines kept the name but not sure when the AFL2 team folded if they still have the same deal but I thought they did. You would have to think they would want the Barnstormers just for the name recognition alone.

    Re: D league announcement

I was playing around on the D-League's website and NBA-TV has scheduled to air between 50-60 D-League games this season.

I think it's time to let the whole Barnstormer thing go. This is a new team, new building, new team name, etc. and i'm still praying Jim Foster won't be invovled with the new AF2 team.

    Re: D league announcement

I wouldn't be shocked if they have some naming contest for the NBDL team. I know M&M mentioned maybe calling them the Skyliners or something.

I'll probably check out some of the NBDL games as well as the new AFL2 Barnstormers. M&M were discussing how NBDL teams always have "reclaimation projects" and debated if Pierre Pierce would be on the team. I agree with Ken that no way you let PP play in the back yard where he commited sexual assualt. If he did something like write bad checks or stole something it would be easier to sell. But say if PP was on the team, I'd probably go just so we could get some "no means no" chants going, lol.

    Re: D league announcement

M&M are pushing for the team to be called the "Skywalkers", playing on the fact that downtown DSM has a series of "Skywalks" to connect downtown buildings.

    Re: D league announcement

If not the Barnstormers, call them the StormTroopers, the Barn Swallows, the BSes, Reincarnates, Yellowmen (like Redmen and for corn), Hogfliers, CyHawks, or Ethanolnites. Let's get some good names out there for consideration.

Let my Fred's Posse Ride: Georges, Naz, Hogue, Bryce, Nader, Monte, Matt, and McKay.

There is no way they can be called the skywalkers, I am sure that name is trademarked by lucasfilms.

I thought Marty's suggestion of "Dukes" was pretty good too.

    Des Moines Ethanolites...I like it.

    Other names to consider:
    Des Moines Snowplows
    Des Moines Cold
Des Moines Let's Not Plow the Side Streets
(Can you tell I'm bitter about the weather?)

    Or you could go simple:
    Iowa Corn
    Iowa Beans
    Des Moines Road Constructioners

That title is reserved for the Ames team. I was up there last night, they still have untouched snow on streets. Duff was still 100% snow covered.

    Re: D league announcement

Per a new DMR Article, the naming rights are for sale...even the name of the city or the state.

How about the Principal Financiers or Nationwide Insurers?
