    Getting killed walking to class.

Anyone that is a student notices that a lot of sidewalks are blocked by snow and fallen treen branches. One girl said she fell down the stairs at the MU. I've seen branches fall and almost hit people. i got hit by some icicles! The commuter lot wasn't plowed this morning. Cars are stuck, buses are sliding everywhere. Needless to say, Iowa State did not put safety first in having school. A lot of people couldn't make it to class due to the weather. Whats it going to take? Someone to die from the weather before the do something about it? If they want my money someday, the should treat me better now.

I had school cancelled once in 2000. It was way worse than this.

Did the girl go down on the Curtis steps? Those claim a few victims every year.

Re: Getting killed walking to class.

Why can't this damn thing happen during school so I can get some classes cancelled. Now I gotta sit around and watching sports all day today:)
You wanted this yesterday. Not that I wouldn't blame you if I was in school.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

They should have kept the university open, but cancelled classes. They were not ready for classes today!

Re: Getting killed walking to class.

I was completely knocked on my can by a gust of wind coming around the corner of one of the towers on my way to class. No snow or ice on the ground - but that wind was just nasty.

I think calling classes today would've been a stretch. It's up to each person if they think they can hack it or not. Dangers exist in getting to class whether it's 35 degrees and icy/snowy or 80 degrees and sunny.

I know Kirkwood in CR was closed today...but they're without power.

Re: Getting killed walking to class.

In some places the trees are so bowed from the weight of the ice and snow that there is only a very small window through which to walk. Add to that in many places the snow has been removed but there is still an inch of ice underneath, and some of the roads are still in nasty shape...

    IS IT SPRING YET???

Re: Getting killed walking to class.

You must just have terrible luck. I have to trek all over campus on Mondays, and I haven't seen any problems that would warrant canceling classes. The two buses that I rode did just fine. Most of the roads have been plowed quite well anyway. The biggest obstacle I've had to surmount was catching my balance when I slipped on a patch of ice between Pearson and Marston. I've had to duck under or around some low-hanging branches, but that's actually kind of fun. Every time I had to do so, people were always smiling as they did so. It's a bit of a reminder of our elementary days, running around in the bushes and pretending they're impenetrable fortresses or some such thing. Everybody was present in all of my classes today, and the campus walkways didn't seem any less busy. I'm sure some folks couldn't make it to campus because of the weather (or are using it as an excuse), but it's not "lots".

I can't argue against the cars being stuck- I've had to dig my own car out twice in the last two days! Once on Saturday morning after two inches of ice coated everything, and once on Sunday night after Saturday night's big snowstorm. Both times it took me about 40 minutes before my car was in a drivable condition, but I would hardly consider that a dangerous situation, much less a life-threatening one. We live in Iowa- get used to it and be glad this is only the first time this winter that it has happened.

Funny/scary story: On Saturday morning, I was expecting to go out and chip the ice off my car and be on my merry way. Nope. I've lived in Iowa all my life, and I've never seen a coating of ice that hard. I was swinging at it with my ice scraper hard enough that I was getting scared I would shatter my windshield, and I couldn't even get a dent in it. My car couldn't build up enough heat for the defroster by just idling in the parking lot, so I had no choice but to roll down my window and drive around town for 10 minutes with my head sticking out the side. Thankfully, this was at 4am or so, and there were no other cars on the slick, unplowed roads. Otherwise, I might have been in trouble. Eventually I was able to pull in next to the Towers and blast out my defroster to melt the windshield. Still, it was an unsettling solution...

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

My freshman year (2000-01), we had classes cancelled once because there was so much ice on the ground...buses couldn't run, people couldn't walk on the sidewalks, it was pretty bad. I don't think they have cancelled classes since.

Re: Getting killed walking to class.

I remember when I was there we had Friday that was terrible. Drake, UNI and Iowa all cancelled classes. Most every smaller school called off classes.
DMACC was shut down. The state had come to a halt except for.........ISU.
There were a lot of people uipset about that one.

Rumor had it that Gov. Branstad made a few phone calls the following Monday and let somoe people know what he thought about it.
Friday rolled around again and we got some snow. Hardly any.
All of the schools kept classes on, except for ISU. I guess that was a make up call.

Ames has to be one of the coldest places. I tell you driving from Sioux City to Ames changes the temp alot. For some reason it just drops there.

If I remember right on that one, the storm didn't start until the night before classes, so they had no time to clear things. With this one, they had some time to start getting things cleared.

If get hurt on campus I would sue. Or I would settle out of court for free basketball tickets and a clone cone. =)

Kirkwood is closed a lot. That's probably the 4th time this year.

The only way I think they'd cancel class is if CyRide is unable to go.

Re: Getting killed walking to class.

I have to agree with Jones. I certainly wasn't expecting classes to be canceled but the campus maintenance crews did a pretty crappy job. Trees everywhere with an inch of ice on every side walk. I fell on my @ss on the stairs next to the MU and the MU parking lot. I about turfed it again outside LeBaron.
