    parker's injury is crippling imo

the bulk of my enthusiasm for potential for the season went out the door with his injury. let's face it, our defense is not very good. particularly on the defensive line. we just lost (arguably) our best defensive line player, with only unproven players behind him. There wasn't much of a pass rush with him, how bad will we look without him.

i think this injury is being vastly underplayed looking at people's ongoing predictions for the season.

of course the injury to money doesn't help either. at least at WR we seem to have depth. at DL we don't.

hate to be a Debbie Downer but this is a bigger loss than what most people seem to recognize.

it is a big loss but i think the people behind him combined will be able to step up and as long as they put 100% in all plays no matter what i will be proud of this team

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Anytime you lose a starter off a unit that is considered one of the weaknesses of your team it's always a big deal. I'm sure we'll be feeling his loss.

Re: parker's injur is crippling imo

I think we will be fine-look at Iowa and who has been out-several key guys and they are doing well, and you are wrong, the D is playing better than last year, look at the stats. True the competition gets better and the toughest team of the entire season is still ahead of us-OSU, but I think we will do okay. I think Parker can play a good role on the sideline helping "coach" the younger players. I am glad to see Bo Williams in the lineup.

The kids getting in trouble bother me, that crap needs to end now.

Losing parker is a problem but one player does not make a team. Parker did not make all or even the bulk of the tackles. If I was a coach on the opposite team I would see if I could exploit parkers absence so it will be interesting to see how the next man in can perform.

It's certainly a big loss, but not the end of the world. Hopefully some kids will step up and fill the void. While our schedule hasn't exactly been filled with offensive powerhouses, I think the performance of the defense has been a pleasant surprise, and I think they will continue to improve. Enough to win a few Big 12 games? We'll see. This staff and team doesn't appear to be the kind to just throw in the towel though.

I'm just concerned/surprised that Patrick Neal is listed ahead of Maggitt. An undersized, converted tight end is beating out last year's scout team player of the year? Parker was small enough...

Yeah, you are correct. I downplayed the injury because he has not really been overly productive since his freshman season. Ever since that PF penalty at Texas, the guy just kind of "disappeared".

He's been a 4 year starter though and while the progression is disappointing, we need guys on the D-line that can play.

Maybe he'll step up and make some plays like his brother did against Iowa.

Losing any starter is bad, but why do you feel he is arguably the best on the Dline? Losing a player from a sub-par unit does not change my predictions or cause me to lose the bulk of my enthusiasm.

well, he is a 4 year starter and a senior. who on the defensive line has a better resume than that? coaches were praising lyle all camp, but on the field there isn't much of a separation between them. i feel he is better at DE than any of the DT's at their respective positions.

Are you aware of Neal's background? He has been in the program a year longer and spent his redshirt year learning the DE position. He was only moved to TE last year to provide some much needed depth which he was able to accomplish. I believe that he has also put in some work at LB. I see the versatility as a plus rather than a minus. Technique is a major factor in DL play and it's a fair assumption that his dad passed on some sound advice to assist Patrick's development as he was learning the game.

I've seen enough standout 225 LB DE's as well as plenty of 260 LB stiffs to know that you don't put much stock into size. It's all about motor, effort, and technique. The main concern about size (applies to both Neal & Maggitt) is to establish a rotation so that they don't get worn down and can be effective in the 4th qtr as well as later in the season.

It hurts, but you move on and adapt. We seem to play well enough after he went out against Army.

    My ranking of DL players:

    Lyle
    Frere
    Parker
    DT committee

Parker is a big loss, but typically once we get into the Big12 season his numbers become less impressive. Don't get me wrong I have been a fan of his over the years, but in the Big 12 he has be less than average.
