Re: Who Has Their Bows Sighted In

Thanks for the reminder, I better get mine out and start practicing. I don't plan to go for a few more weeks and I don't take shots over 20 yards (heavy brush) so I feel confident with my shooting ability with very little practice.

I've been shooting all week and plan on going out after work for a bit, but more of a scouting trip than anything... I have debated getting a decoy this year, anyone have any experience with those? thoughts?

I have never used a decoy but what I have read about them I would wait awhile until we get closer to the rut to use one.

Find a spot between their bedding and food source for the early season and you are money as long as you don't get "buck" fever when your draw back your bow :-)

They have been using alot of decoys on some of the shows I watch, so I thought it might not be a bad idea...

Re: Who Has Their Bows Sighted In

I've been practicing on the ground and doing some scouting. I just need to get in a little practice from a stand and get my clothes scent washed and sealed in the bag. I'll get more serious about hunting in a couple three more weeks. With this rain it's looking like the corn will be in a little longer.

Re: Who Has Their Bows Sighted In

The rain stopped long enough here this evening for me to sneak out of the house and slip into the stand for the last 2 hours. An hour in and 2 does come into the foodplot.12 yard shot and my first doe tag is filled.
Now I can kick back and concentrate on football all weekend.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

I used a decoy last year (primos scarface), and highly recommend it. I killed a small 7, who kept his attention on the decoy and away from my blind. The decoy is what brought him in away from the does he was with.

If you do get one, I would recommend one that has movement, and one that you can remove the antlers on as well.

Congrats!! Bow hunting is the by far the best hunting available to Iowans. Everytime you harvest an animal with a bow its a impressive accomplishment. Especially in day one.

Did you have the anlers on when you got him? What time of year was it? Did you combine with any scents?

I agree... A couple of years ago I got this guy on day one, literally 15 minutes into ground hunting on public land... I didn't even have an arrow nocked and he slipped by me from behind...

Color me ignorant but how hard can it be to kill a deer in Iowa, bow or otherwise?

Don't confuse city deer / golf course deer with country deer.
