    Interesting (Welch Ave)

I was looking over the Ames City Council minutes concerning the new subdivision west of Ada Hayden. It discussed various utilities reaching the new development and annexation by the city. One thing that caught my eye was the mention of relocating Fire Station #2 to North Dakota Ave. That's the station on Welch Ave. IMO that spot would be awesome for a big bar. Also, without the station there, the city COULD close down that first block of Welch and make it pedestrian only. They could widen the sidewalks and allow for outdoor/sidewalk seating. This would be a huge improvement for the area.

As long as they keep the fire poles!! (I'm assuming because they are a fire station they have such poles).

That would make sense. No way in hell Ames would do that.

Your mind is thinking about where real men go to get wood isn't it?

I heard when People's left that they talked to the city about purchasing that location for the new People's... that'd warm my heart if they brought it back there...

That would be great, and it should be done, but:

Sheesh, I remember when they built that fire station (and the resulting cave-in as well as the subsequent bar of that name), and now they want to close it already?

    Re: Interesting (Welch Ave)

I'd be somewhat surprised they do this.

Over the years - the City and police dept have used that fire station as a staging area/command and control during Veishea.

Not to mention - where would be the closest station to Campus/Welch/Dorms? That's a pretty good haul from North Dakota.

This. The City of Ames would never spend the time or money to improve the bars on Welch. If they had their choice they would probably just have them all closed.

I always thought the old McDonald's location would have been a great bar/outside patio place. Somewhere with garage doors can open. Brothers in Iowa City comes to mind but much, much cooler.

Who the hell decided a fire station in the middle of the bar scene was a good idea? Seriously.

I was the DMR paperboy that knocked on that firehouse door early one winter morning in the mid-70s to tell them the Cave Inn was on fire -- honest to gawd!!!

Actually the bars pay substantial property taxes and usually a portion of sales tax goes to the city or county. That can add up in the books for the city/county.

Then you're to blame. They obviously saved it, cause I sat in that dump many a night in 87-88.

    Re: Interesting (Welch Ave)

I highly doubt this will happen because ISU pays Ames allot of money for fire protection and they will not be happy to see that fire station moved further away.

Most of the reason Ames has all the stations and equipment they do is because of ISU. Ankeny isn't that much smaller now than Ames and they just built a second station and still rely heavily on volunteer help. Ames has three stations with full time crews for each station and their stations are filled with equipment that makes Ankeny's look like toys. Largly because of ISU
