Wow, that could have been a lot worse. I've always seen them dropped on the chest, not the throat.

Just what I was thinking - and they said that one of the strength coaches was spotting him!
I've been in some commercial gyms where they prohibit thumbless grips. You'd think all strength coaches wouldn't allow it either...

Re: USC running back drops weight bar on throat

It really doesn't say whether his thumbs were wrapped around or not. I would probably guess they weren't. But, that doesn't mean they were either. Bars can slip either way if you are doing enough weight, although a lot more likely to slip if your thumbs are under. There may have been a couple other ways that the bar could have fallen also, with his wrists or arm giving out.
But, if I was a guessing man, I would say he probably had his thumbs under the bar and the weight slipped.

Gotta feel bad for a kid working hard to make himself better and having an injury like this.

Re: USC running back drops weight bar on throat

Here's an example of having your thumbs in the correct position, but having your wrist or arm give out. This guys drops it on his neck as well.

Re: USC running back drops weight bar on throat

I doubt this was a thumb issue. When I think about it, I would think that that would make the bar fall forward onto the chest and not onto the neck. I could be wrong of course but I would think it would hard for the bar to get to the neck if it fell forward of the hand. I would guess this is more likely a wrist issue or some freak accident.

Re: USC running back drops weight bar on throat

So regardless of how he was holding the bar... what is the reason some wrap their thumbs under the bar rather than around?
