    Major College Recruiting Story

I am as interested as the next know nothing average fan about the chances the number one basketball recruit in the country might land with the Cyclones.

reading through the whole discussion on this board reminded of a major recruiting battle I got to see first hand in High Schoocl. In approximately 1990 Russ Millard was discovered at a Nike Camp where all of the National Powers took notice. Russ was two years older than I was but we played ball together and he like many star recruits had a tough decision to make. Dr. Tom sent his number one assistant Gary Close early and often, Gary spent what seemed like everyday coming to weight lifting, open gyms, etc. The Hawks were good, but not of national importance at the time. In comes Roy Williams from Kansas and Lute Olsen from Arizona, we thought for sure Russ would pick one of these more elite programs. He had all the reasons in the world to go somewhere bigger than Iowa. I seem to recall his announcement was moved around quite a bit which just spurred more speculation. On signing day, many of us thought for sure he was moving on - well he signed with Iowa. I believe he cited family as one of his reasons for staying closer to home, unfortunately for him - he wasn't able to get 4 years in at Iowa due to academic issues, but man this guy was a talent.

I also had the privelege of growing up with Dedric Ward, starting to play basketball together at a very early age. Dedric was a very good point guard and his stated goal was to play basketball in college. At the time Iowa State was irrelevant in football especially for a receiver and Iowa had signed Tavian Banks and Tim Dwight that year, I don't know if this was the deciding factor or not but Terry Allen AND Eldon Miller recruited Dedric. Of course he ended up just playing football, but the possibility of participating in basketball I believe weighed in his decision and I also seem to recall Iowa wanted him at DB and he didn't want to play DB. In hindsight - he sure made the right choice with a multi-year career in the NFL playing receiver.

HB's reasons may be very different than the reasons for these two examples, but wherever he goes - from what I have heard of his character - I would expect his reasons to be very well considered and of course will support him. (and hope in the meantime hope he might just choose ISU!)

Top 5 reasons to choose ISU:
    5) Close to Home, if you are going big time in a year or two anyway - why move twice in a short time?
    4) a bunch of middle aged Men that have nothing better to do than speculate about your future (like me) would be really happy!
    3) You could stake claim to "The Mayor" of Ames- or better yet "Governor of Iowa" -
    2) If Marcus Fizer can be a number 4th pick out of Ames, you definitely
    have a shot a number 1 pick
    1) It is unlikely Dean Smith Arena or Allen Fieldhouse could ever be renamed H. Barnes Arena, but James H. Hilton has nothing on you!

Thanks for contributing to the thread

OP, good story on Millard. Unfortunately people like to think the worst and therefore many already seem positive that Harrison is as good as gone even though he hasn't said anything of the sort.

If that would ever happen I would stop donating. The last thing ISU needs is to sell out...James H. Hilton is known far and wide.

Is this why Olsen and Williams backed off recruiting him?

PS: just my opinion, but if Harrison decides to sign with us, it would be a bigger story than Johnny Orr's signing to be our coach - and that was a huge, surprise at the time.

I don't recall Lute and Roy backing off...they may have, but it wasn't apparent - it was apparent after his decision became known he wanted to be a Hawkeye.

As for the poster that would stop donating over the name- it was a joke...point only that he can make his own name here...

Good post. Thanks for the blurb on Dedric too, I wasn't aware of all that, but I do remember watching him play in the Dome when I was younger.

The ONLY way this would make any sense would be if he told the players he wasn't going to be playing at ISU. I still highly doubt that the #1 high school player would be left in the cold.

That's just ridiculous. Is there like some magical mystery dimension that you pull this junk from? How do you come up with your bizarre little fantasies?

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
