    Smoking on Campus?

Back in the day, where on campus could you smoke indoors? Could you really smoke in all classrooms, the MU, dining halls, dorms, library? When did ISU begin to phase out smoking in buildings?

I'm just curious. Heard they're going to start getting aggressive targeting smokers on campus (yes, outdoors). When I hear people get worked up about a wisp of cigarette smoke out in the open air, it boggles my mind that you could ever light one up in a classroom.

    Re: Smoking on Campus?

Once apon a time you could smoke anywhere. Even on air planes. I remember how big of a deal it was when they banned smoking on planes, then came government buildings, and stores and so on. I wasnt very old at the time but do remember it.

As far as I know ISU went "smoke free" (in buildings and within 15ish ft from buildings) with the Iowa Smoke Free Air Act

I don't remember anyone actually smoking in classrooms. But that was the Eighties, check with the Sixties.

    Re: Smoking on Campus?

In the 70's I don't remember any smoking in classrooms or in the building, but I think the profs. could probably smoke in their offices if they wanted, but not esewhere. Don't recall much about it as it wasn't a big issue.
I am sure there was not smoking in the classroom, but more as a not logical thing to do, then a rule.

It's funny watching Mad Men and seeing them smoking everywhere. Even the doctor smoked when he walked into the office to examine a patient.

I had a prof that smoked in his office in the 90s. I am sure it was illegal then.

I went to ISU in the early 70's. There was smoking in the dorms and outside on campus. I don't remember anyone smoking in classrooms, the library, or dining halls.

Lived in Friley in 1997 and you had to step outside to smoke at that time...

    Re: Smoking on Campus?

Why wouldn't ISU get tough on smokers. It is the law that they cannot smoke on campus. Be happy that so far they haven't gone as far as enforcing it during tailgating which is illegal as well. If you don't like it, don't criticize ISU, go talk to your local representatives.

    Re: Smoking on Campus?

In the late 90s, you could smoke in your dorm room only if you were on a "smoking" floor (I don't think there were many of them). I remember people heading to the M-shop between classes, too, to sit down and smoke.

Except in the tailgating lots, where they seem to look the other way. Funny how that works. Let the donors by, but hammer the students. I personally think that it's wrong to legislate what people do outdoors if it has zero affect on others.
