    Weight Training

I am more and more glad to see the new strength and conditioning coaches at ISU. I think I bought into Getty hype that wasn't delivered upon. Latest example. Scott Stephenson did 21 reps at the combine. Only three linemen did fewer (20) most were mid to upper 20's. Seems to be a consistent theme.

A couple other totals of note....Mike Jones of Iowa 28, Blalock of Texas 40, Studdard of Texas 32, Ramierez of Texas Tech 40,

Wow...good info. Didn't McGettigan win national strength and conditioning coach of the year a few years ago? If so, I would sure like to know what goes into that award. It does seem that we have not done well in the trenches for several years.

Can our football strength coaches take some of our ballers under their wing? I think some of those guys can use some meat on their bones.

I'm not sure you can blame it all on Getty. Some of it has to do with genetics. Scott may just not be able to get as strong as some of the genetic freaks, that a school like Texas for instance, is more likely to have.

    Re: Weight Training

21 reps for a pro athlete is not that much. Not that I can do any and I have been weight training for 6 months. But my body type is better for running that lifting.

yes very good info...Scotty Doesn't Know is a good guy, I wish him the best of luck in the future. but I will say that is a more than fair assessment of how our "trench" play has been for several years...Overall we've been mandhandled many of the past few years, especially last year. I am one of the few guys who will actually watch what is going on at the line of scrimmage at a game instead of just watching the skill position players. 2005 was one of our best years in the trenches in recent memory, we also did have the easier part of the big 12 south on the schedule and just took it to teams like iowa, colorado, and a&m...but at an overall look, the o and d line have historically been a weakness, i think it will soon become and ISU strength with Chizik's crew. I just hope we can keep the same superior development at other postitions up (mainly WR.)

    Re: Weight Training

While I'm also expecting improvement with the change in S&C direction, it might not be fair to lay all of Stephenson's low score on Getty. I'm pretty sure that Stephenson came into the program with existing shoulder problems. He sat out most of last spring to help his recovery. This had to limit his upper body development.

Good point Steve, however "weak" performance has been a trademark of ISU football players at combine in recent years.

    Re: Weight Training

I liked Getty, great guy and spoke well. Very courteous and gave some good advice when I got to meet him.

That said, hopefully the changes made in Ames will yield some great results for us - in the weight room and on the field.

    Re: Weight Training

Is it just me, or have the Cyclones had their share and more of injuries the past few years? Just bad luck, or maybe less than adequete training?

    Re: Weight Training

That would be correct. Anyone here ever watch a guy with a shoulder problem try and bench. I have.

Here we go again with the getty bashing. Some of Iowa's guys did poorly in the bench press last year or the year before as well.

I hope the ISU strength and conditioning program is better, but from everything I have been told by former players, the gains ISU will make in the coaching change will not be in the weight room.

PS Some guys don't have the ability others do. I know that is a radical thought. How did Dobbins do last year?
