The new Sculpter park in Des Moines

I must say up front I don't know crap about art. However I can't beleive our city paid anything for these stupid looking "art" peices. Most of it looks like junk my kids could have made.
I really don't understand why Des Moines paid millions for this crap. There is only one peice that looks like someone put some time into it. It's the peice with all the letters that forms a human head.
Anyone else think it looks rediculous?

    +1

However, I'm not one for "art". I'd rather they did some landscaping or something.

Wasn't much of this donated by PappaJohn or someone?

I believe all the sculptures were donated by John Pappajohn. The city only paid about half a million of the $6.5 million that was raised to build the park where the sculptures sit.

A non-intellectual (two misspellings and a grammar mistake) complaining about art (intellectual); too funny.

Its there to beautify the city and make people want to live in Des Moines.

    #1 - Sculpture.

    #2 - it was donated.

    #3 - Piece

#4 - the only one that looks "rediculous" (sic) is you.

You must be a tavern hawk

Then don't put crappy looking art there. Get someone that makes something cool to look at. Not junk the looks like a 8 year could do it.

Consider the possibility that there are other ambitions in art other than merely "looking realistic."

Hey, Devil Dog, how much do you think these artists know about the Marine Corps?

That's how much you know about art. The fact that you've posted here regarding the sculpture garden means the artists have succeeded in their attempt to provoke thought.

Would you prefer another parking ramp? They're pretty useful.

I like it. Look at most big cities around the country. They have similar stuff. To me, anything the city can do to make itself unique and give people another reason to check it out is good in my book. Would you rather they go back 10 years to when downtown DSM was becoming a ghost town?

I applaud the city and Pappajohn for bringing this to DSM.

No but how about a memorial to the military?
About everyone I know thinks it looks crappy. Me included.

Are you implying that "intellectuals" are above spelling or grammar mistakes?

I don't know jack about art, nor have I seen the sculptures until two minutes ago via the link provided in this thread. Though not do not think it is bad as knownothing thinks, no way in hell does it take an "intellectual" to understand that these sculptures are nothing special.

Re: The new Sculpter park in Des Moines

As hard as it is to believe, there is more to life than football.

Pappajohn donated the art, Nationwide is donating 10 years worth of surviellence to keep it protect, etc. Des Moines now versus 10-15 years ago is a better place because of the improvements they have made downtown.

From the library and the Western Gateway improvements, to Court Ave., the East Village, Science Center, downtown housing, and now this, Des Moines feels like a city and not a town that everyone apologizes for.

Head over to the Capitol Building and the land surrounding it. There are several memorials to the military.
