    Hockey Brawl

Is there a difference between the brawl in the hockey game last night and the one a few weeks ago in the NBA? From my perspective there was a possible cheap shot followed by teammates defending each other in both of them but I think the reaction to the two will be very different. In a way the hockey one seems almost worse because the one coach put five thugs on the ice looking for immediate revenge. Although people say that Isiah Thomas told his guys to go after somebody in that game.

    What do you think?

Hockey's premise is physical, basketball isn't that way.

I can buy that to a certain degree but basketball can be pretty physical at times and the NHL obviously doesn't want bench clearing brawls or coaches climbing the glass to get to each other.

It's more of a sociological acceptance issue. Hockey has checking, where you level the guy, basketball has slapping the wrist. I think a better way to look at it would be between football and hockey instead. When FIU? and Miami went at it, there were some issues; but hockey generally doesn't do a whole lot unless it's blatent you had malice intent to start a brawl (see the NHL 2-3 years ago and that incident). It's just more acceptable with hockey because we've come to expect it, with football and basketball, it's viewed as having intent to harm (Cowboys lineman who had his face cleated this fall). We let certain things slide in football that we wouldn't with basketball as well. We see linemen throwing short jabs to their blockee, and it kind of rolls off the back. Look at Nascar, and driving in the streets (bad parrallel, really but it'll work). If someone drives 2-3 inches off of your bumper and causes a massive pile-up on I-35, we chastise the driver 2-3 inches behind your bumper; in Nascar, "they're being competitive." It's all really just a matter of societal acceptance.

    Re: Hockey Brawl

Unfortunately that is a part of hockey that most hockey fans don't enjoy. It is loved by the casual fan much as a wreck at a NASCAR event. It is similar to the protective beanball in baseball. Every team has their skill palyers and the goons. If it is thought that the opponent did something to harm a skilled player you are guaranteed to have a retaliaition to the other team. The problem is deciding if it was a dirty hit or something that just turns out bad as was the case here. If the player had his helmet buckled up tighter it probably wouldn't have come off and he wouldn't have hit his unprotected head on the ice.

Basketball, specifically the NBA, is under a microscope when in comes to fights, brawls, whatever you call them. There is scuffleing in nearly every NFL & NHL game that would get player thrown out and suspended in the NBA. Baseball for some reason considers throwing a fast ball at someones head satisfactory gamemanship - and the resulting benchclearing fight an appropriate retalitory response. How can a game played by players generally >50 ft apart condone so much premeditatied fighting? The NBA has aggression problems at times, as in any sport, but it is as quick, if not moreso than any other major sport to
    A) take game of is via in game punishment (intentionals, technicals, & flagrants)
    AND
    B) fine / suspend participants in a timely fashion
