Latest Sagarin MBB Rating - How Low can we Go since the last millenium?

If you go to NCAA dance, you should be #50 or better realtimerpi.com. Then if you want NIT, think #50 - #90 rating. Iowa & UNI are NIT track.
Drake has some NIT hopes. We are #11 iun Big 12 behind Baylor and ahead of Colorado. We need 4 out of 6 wins (including one or two in the Big 12 tournament) to go NIT. That probably means we have to beat at least one good school besides Nebraska and Texas Tech. LE, TD, SA, and TF are doing better than GM. Who would have thunk?

If that is a knock on Greg, I really think it is unwarranted. He didn't have anything to work with. He at least deserves a break in his first year. If not his first two years. By year 3, expect big things.

They just beat Nebraska.... which still really isn't anyone. They sit at 3-10 (11th place) in the Big 12 with wins over Texas Tech and Colorado as well. They are 13-13 overall.

We sit at 5-8 (9th place) in the Big 12 with wins over Missouri, Colorado, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Baylor. We are 14-13 overall.

Baylor doesn't have any impressive wins that would trump what we've done out of conference, so I just don't see how they are that far ahead of us in the RPI standings.

Being in the South division they play teams like A&M, Tech, and Texas twice. That probably helps their SOS a bit since the north is only KU this year (ugh).

Re: Latest Sagarin MBB Rating - How Low can we Go since the last millenium?

Our RPI was 162 in '02. In '03 it was 94 and last year it was 93, with an NBA player and a 1500 point scorer.

We haven't fallen at all and we're right on track actually.

A win at Kansas would do good for our RPI.
Also the only nonconference games that help our RPI are OSU and Bradley.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

And our RPI in '99 was 112. So really, this year isn't that much of an abberation at all.

To be best, you must beat the best. Two years from now to be in the NCAA, we need to be #60 or better.

Re: Latest Sagarin MBB Rating - How Low can we Go since the last millenium?

Baylor is ahead of us because they beat Texas Tech. Texas Tech had a solid pre-conference schedule, and won 4 games on the road in pre-conference, giving them a high rank. Winning on the road does wonders for your RPI, since it's weighted more for road wins. (1.3 vs. 0.7)

You're absolutely correct Cy. We have to give Greg Mac a pass this year and probably next season also. When all those players left it was almost like getting the proverbial "Death Sentence".

I still have faith in Greg Mac to get it done here at Iowa State, and lead us to many many great seasons of winning basketball. Besides I like his system a lot better than Wayne Morgan's system! If one can call that a system!

Re: Latest Sagarin MBB Rating - How Low can we Go since the last millenium?

RPI is not all about who you beat...some of you are more referring to a team's resume as if it were trying to get into the NCAA Tourney...there are lots of factors in a team's RPI:
wins, opponents' records, opponent's opponents' records, etc
Baylor is getting the advantage of having two games against top teams such as A&M, UT, TTU, OU, and OSU...that's 10 games against top 60 RPI teams, plus they had KU. We have KU twice, and 1 against each of those others. And our nonconf schedule was awful, absolutely awful, in terms of quality teams, and the quality ones are being made into jokes by their conferences: Minn, Iowa, UNI.
Review this for RPI understanding, if any one person can truly understand it. :)

I agree with this year but not next. There are always problems with a program, after next year it will be Taylor, Jiri, Clark, McIntosh leaving. someone not getting in because of grades, etc. These coaches are being paid millions to overcome them, and if Mac is the long term solution like most think, then he will as well. But we are still Iowa State, and there are always going to be some rebuilding years mixed in, these years can't just be free passes for our coach no matter who it is.
