    Special Teams

Anyone else surprised by our special teams play so far this year? Our defense is doing better than I thought they would at this point in the season, our offense not so much, but I'll take it for the time being, but special teams seems to be extremely solid:

Brandtner has some sort of bionic leg on punting... Mahoney apparently doesn't have a range limitation on field goals, and for returning, opponents can't really attempt to kick it to a weak returner with both Sims and LJ back there; either are capable of explosive returns.

My only concern is with the punt returns... Lenz so far seems to have an attitude where he's out to show everyone what he's capable of. I'm not sure if it's due to the fact that he can back it up, or if it's due to his age and being niave on that front... It seems like he's playing with fire with some of these returns, and I hope after this game he's realized that he shouldn't feel the need to try and run every return.

I actually don't mind seeing Lenz trying to make something happen back there. We haven't had a decent kick returner since Todd Miller. I was getting real sick of watching guys call for fair catches everytime.

Great post. I think Lenz will be a good fit back there pretty soon.

    Re: Special Teams

I was amused that special teams, which cost us Toledo last 2 years ago, played a big part of our win tonight

(2 recoveries in the red Zone after punts on 4th down)

    Re: Special Teams

I am also impressed with the special teams play, and I think that's definitely something that can keep us in games. I remember back when I had to hold my breath everytime we were punted to, but now I can have at least a good amount of confidence that we won't just drop it. That's definitely a good thing :)

I agree; it makes these games a lot more exciting when you got someone willing to return the ball like he's been doing... it just makes me really nervous when I see him doing it with a defender already on him before he catches the ball

Even with the laughing smiley (), let's look at it. Chizik brought it some "guru" for special teams, and we had 2 messy years.

Rhoads handles them himself, and we see every part of that game start dependably and getting better and better. Hmmmmmm............

Oh, and we play some defense now. I would like to thank Auburn again for helping us to make this change.

Ahhh, remember miller time? Fun stuff watchin Todd, but be careful what you wish for, I'd rather him hold on to the ball than try to do too much.

I like where are special teams are and I hope they keep it up if not do better as well, it's obvious Rhoads has a lot attention paid to this part of the game compared to chizik. Special teams change 7 point losses into 3 point wins. I love what Grant Mahoney has brought to the table this year

I agree. The kid has the ability. Give him a chance.
