    Car People

OK...firstly, I know nothing about cars.
Anyway, today the exhaust and the big box it's connected to rusted and fell off my 15 year old vehicle. I was able to drive home without a problem. Now I already have a new vehicle ordered and coming in about 2 weeks.
My question is- is it safe to drive around (at least to work and back) without this equipment for 2 weeks? Is it a serious violation, if at all? Or would I be better off spending the couple of hundred bucks and getting the part replaced just for 2 weeks.
Regardless, the car is heading to the junk yard in 2 weeks.

Are you talking about the muffler? If so, your car will just be louder and smell a bit more. No biggie.

And if you live in the southern 1/3rd of Iowa, you'll blend right in.

Yes it's the muffler. Haven't noticed the car being any louder, but there is a mild smell.

    Re: Car People

The first issue would be a safety concern with the exhaust gases especially since you mentioned the smell. If the exhaust system rusted off, there is a good chance that there is also some body or floorboard rust that could easily lead to exhaust getting into the passenger compartment. I would avoid any extended trips and probably drive with the windows down.

Another issue would be noise levels and getting a ticket for that. Hard to believe that you don't notice any elevated levels, but maybe the muffler has not been very effective because it already had rusted out inside. I'd avoid racing by any police or sheriff stations or vehicles.

The last concern isn't very important since you are trashing the car, but engine valve life is shortened if operated without the proper back pressure from the exhaust system.

Make sure you change out the summer air for fall/winter air in your tires.
