    Hawkins Buyout

Looks like sCUm and Hawkins are stuck with one another...darn.

    10 wins in 2009....yeah right

Hawkins might be safe because of CU's cash-strapped budget - Big 12 - ESPN

Despite a disappointing 0-2 start, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins' job might not be immediate jeopardy because of the lack of money in the school's athletic department.

The Boulder Camera reported it would cost nearly $3 million to buyout the remaining three years of Hawkins' contract. And that expense is on top of the cost of hiring a new coach.

Hawkins' contract contains a clause limiting the school's liability to $850,000 per contract year if it should terminate him without cause. Hawkins would have more than three years remaining if he was fired at any point this season. His current contract runs through Jan. 31, 2013.

The school's total liability could approach $3 million under the terms of the deal if any partial year was prorated in a buyout. If the buyout was limited to three years, it would cost CU no more than $2,550,000, the Camera reported.

Hawkins' job status was called into question after embarrassing losses to Colorado State and Toledo to start the season.

The Colorado athletic department remains in deep debt with most of an $8 million loan from the campus and the CU system in 2006 still to be paid off. Part of that debt was caused by the last coaching change when athletic director Mike Bohn fired Gary Barnett at the end of the 2005 season and hired Hawkins.

People think we are in a mess. We aren't. Colorado and KSU have much bigger problems than we do. Financially, too.

I really thought he'd be a good coach at CU. No skin off my back, but its confusing how a guy so successful at BSU can't seem to find his way at all in the B12.

I think the reason is because it was Hawkin's offensive coordinator, not Hawkin's himself, who was really responsible for the success at Boise State.

I thought the same thing about Hawkins. I really though he'd be a force over in boulder by now.

I am confused by Hawkins. Really thought he was a great coach.

I am very thankful for Jamie Pollard right about now for doing all the fundraising he did when the economy was strong. We would be in a very, very, very deep hole right now without him raising our AD budget.

A booster will come up with the $$$ if they really want him out. Which if they go 0-12, they will.

I'm sort of hoping ISU can give Hawkins his 10th loss of the season.

LOL - it's been a tossup for me as to which Big XII team I hate worse - Mizzou or CU.

Probably Mizzou lately, due to their "success". But I've long had it in for CU, dating back to McCartney, and Skippy the Weasel.

    Re: Hawkins Buyout

At first I thought that Colorado had a great hire but I ran into a few BSU fans in Minnesota at a bar and they were happy to see him go. They said he was all about himself and that the real coach is the one they have now. I think if they replaced him with the BSU coach. Slap in the face.

    Re: Hawkins Buyout

CU is in a mess. The school has football tradition too. Here we are with very little tradition trying to get out of our current hole and yet you have CU, despite the history, in worse shape. CU has a National Title and something like 25 conference titles. It goes to show that anyone can struggle in this business. Past success doesn't mean anything anymore. Neither do past failures.

Yeah but I don't think boosters will be able to afford paying off Hawkins contract and hiring a new coach. Colorado will be wanting a big name to come in to Boulder and start winning games immediately and they don't have the money to do that. We'll all know how desperate Colorado really is if they try to restructure Hawkins deal at the end of the year.

I would like to see CU go 1-11, with their (1) victory over Nebraska.
