What would your pre-game speech be?

Mine would be pretty short and simple:

"Gentlemen, I don't have to tell you that ever since you have walked on the face of this earth, every single year there's a general assumption that Iowa has the best football program in the state. However, for one very brief 3-hour period each year, we have an opportunity to challenge that assumption...to shock people....to demonstrate that Iowa is a Cyclone state, not a Hawkeye state.

Gentlemen, that very brief 3-hour period begins right now. Don't waste a God **** second of it!"

How much do you value your scholarship?

We are playing a team that looked like an intramural squad, barely beating a 1AA team. On top of that, the intramural team just lost a cornerstone of their OL.

If we can't beat a team like this, you all better brush up your resumes and start looking for a new place to play ball.

    Or something like that.....

AGREE! Good god, cyclonestate built them up to be Ohio State. I mean, every year, a win against Iowa would "shock people?" Huh?

Re: What would your pre-game speech be?

I envision something similar to this

Pollard: War's over, man. Ferentz dropped the big one.
Rhoads: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough... the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!

I like Chiz's approach when we played them in 2007 and they played his pre-game speech on Vs. Didn't even mention Iowa, just talked about playing hard for each other and having fun. It isn't about them, it is about us getting better every week under CPR.

Pretty much also debunked the "superbowl" myth excuse that stupid hok fans like to use.

Re: What would your pre-game speech be?

    Win One for the Gipper
It was halftime of the 1928 Army vs. Notre Dame Game that legendary head coach Knute Rockne gave his "win one for the Gipper" speech to his beleaguered players. Notre Dame was having one of its worst season's on record and Rockne was trying to salvage what he could of the season. He told his players about the tragic death of George Gipp, a great Notre Dame player. Many historians doubt that Rockne's version of Gipp's last words was true. None the less, Notre Dame did win the game against Army that memorable day.

This speech became ingrained in popular culture after its recreation in the 1940 movie, Knute Rockne- All American. The phrase "Win one for the Gipper" became a permanent fixture in American society. Here is the transcript of the dialogue from the movie...

    Knute Rockne:
    Well, boys ... I haven't a thing to say.
Played a great game...all of you. Great game.
    (He tries to smile.)
I guess we just can't expect to win ‘em all.
    (Rockne pauses and says quietly.)
I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years --
None of you ever knew George Gipp.
It was long before your time.
But you know what a tradition he is at Notre Dame...
(There is gentle, faraway look in his eyes as he recalls the boy's words.)
And the last thing he said to me -- "Rock," he said -
"sometime, when the team is up against it -- and the
breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go out there
with all they got and win just one for the Gipper...
(Knute's eyes become misty and his voice is unsteady as he finishes.)
I don't know where I'll be then, Rock", he said - "but
I'll know about it - and I'll be happy."

(There is a hushed stillness as Rockne and the crowd of boys look at each other. In the midst of this tense silence,
Rockne quietly says "Alright," to the men beside him, and his chair is wheeled slowly out of the dressing room.)

    A Player:
Well, what are we waiting for?

With a single roar, the players throw off their blankets and rush through the doorway

Re: What would your pre-game speech be?

The guys will be up. No pre-game speech necessary.

I do however think the post-game speech is VERY important, and mine would be something like this:

"That's a hell of a good win gentlemen. You fought hard and executed well. You have made this university, this state, and most especially these fans very proud to be Cyclones.
But let me tell you something else gentlemen. This game was only a step in the direction of our team goal 'to win a bowl game'. And if we go out to Kent State next weekend and don't get the job done this win today means absolutely nothing. Lets keep that goal in mind gentlemen. There is still a lot of work to be done."
