Why I hate ISU... a history lesson (8 votes)
The disdain most Iowa fans have for ISU is not simply "cross-state rivalry" stuff. There's more behind it...much of which really defines the Clones. And I was surprised that KFz himself refer to it this week. I thought nobody else remembered 1981...but I'm glad he did.
I was a drummer in the HMB in 1981, the first year Iowa played in Ames following the resumption of the series. After 4 years played in Iowa City (for obvious reasons...attendance and gate $) the series played it's first game in Ames. It was a chance for ISU to showcase it's football program and it's University. The way their fans responded was pathetic.
People driving to the game were greeting by "F*** Iowa" signs attached to numerous street and road signs along the road. For those of you under 30, that was still considered profanity in 1981
Once in the stadium Iowa fans, players, band, cheerleaders and coaches were subjected to a constant shower of raw, profane, caveman chants yells and attacks.
The band and cheerleaders were pelted with crap not only as we performed but simply sitting by the field. I remember walking into the stadium early, before it was even 1/4 full and getting harrassed by the locals. One flag girl took a shot to the back (I think it was an orange) that had her in tears and scared to death. (FYI, on every other roadtrip I took in 4 years, the host band welcomed us as proud ambassadors of their school)
There were widely reported and confirmed episodes of fans behind the Iowa bench shouting "That's what you get for playing a ****** quarterback"...aimed at Pete Gales. The taunts and debris continued afterwards.
I recall our band bus being pounded on, yelled at and having stuff hit the windows as we left. The driver was visibly shaken.
On that day "Clones" were defined for me. Inbred sheep-breeders with no class. And that will never change. Iowa will always be the Hawkeye state...regardless of any game score. That I know. Because Iowa State SUCKS!!!
