UI enrollment is down; Iowa State is up

Enrollment down at University of Iowa | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

ISU has record number of students | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

I wish it were easier to make comparisons, that all relevant figures had been provided.

    But total enrollment is now:

    ISU 27,945 (up 1089, or 4 percent)
    UI 30,328 (down 233, or 1 percent)

    And the freshman class is:
    ISU: 4,356
    UI: 4,063

Professional students (law and medicine, including nursing and dentistry school, I think; versus veterinary) and graduate students (5719 versus 4860) I think give UI the leg up. Not positive this methodology is correct, but if you subtract from total UI enrollment the total graduate school and total undergraduate enrollment (both figures available in the UI article), that would make 4,034 professional students at UI versus 564 at ISU.

You would think the Register could publish the ISU undergrad enrollment. Was that figure not released?

    Right.

But using the same methodology in the prior paragraph, subtracting from the total, the graduate and professional school enrollment at ISU, that would give 22,251 ISU undergraduates, versus 20,824 at UI.

Any corrections others may have would be appreciated.

Says a lot about the difference in campus life. Iowa is too spread out and more dangerous

You wouldn't want to enroll in a college that has had numerous arrests and attacks recently would you?

OK, I will agree with that to a degree. Reading between the lines in the UI article, though, I got the impression that perhaps more in the Des Moines area are choosing to stay closer to home because of the recession. Just a guess. That is a pretty big swing. It looks like international student numbers might also have had an effect.

I think it says more about how affected the campus still is as a result of the floods. Enrollment is up almost everywhere due to the economy and the feeling that most people who have lost a job will probably run out of unemployment before they can obtain a new job in their field (if indeed a job ever becomes available for the person who is over a year without a job).

Sad times. Thanks a lot GW Bush.

Grad school enrollment was also up... i think the recession plays a role in that as well, as more students are seeing a bad job market and deciding to stick around a couple more years hoping things will be better, or at least they'll have another item on the resume when they get out.

I think it has been like this for awhile, though UI surged more recently. If you looked at Iowa natives only, the difference would be even greater.

Do UI's numbers include those currently in prison?

and yet, some have more than others ... I'd bet you couldn't come up with two alike to justify your implication that he is being "city-ist"

Yeah I probably couldn't cuz i don't know what you mean by this.

I'm saying he needs to take off his U of I hate goggles cuz both cities aren't exactly Detroit or St. Louis.

ok ... but that doesn't mean you can't compare and contrast the crime rates.

Just because it isn't Newark, doesn't mean it's Pleasentville.
