    Jesse Said What?

Clicked on KXnO and heard them talking about Jesse Smith giving the Hawkey's some locker room fodder for this weekend.

What did he say? That Hawkeye's do need ceiling fans in their bathrooms? (their **** does stink)

    Re: Jesse Said What?

Basically he just said that the UNI game showed that the Hawks aren't as good as everyone thinks they are.

he said: Maybe....Iowa isn't as good as everyone thought.

Played waaaaay more than what it was.

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs

Anyone any where near the game last Saturday already knows this! Of course when you fans and the local media start building scenarios to be in the NC game in June, than ya, it is a let down.

If there's one thing thats more overrated then Notre Dame football, it's the "bulletin board material" If anyone thinks the Iowa D is going to tackle harder because of this or Adam Robinson is going to run harder or Stanzi is going to throw better passes they're out of there mind. It's all pre-game fodder for the talk shows, and nothing more. What's he supposed to say? "Wow, that Iowa team is really good, I should be lucky to even be on the same field with them" Hardly... Let Miller keep playing it, maybe the Hawks will start believing it.

    Re: Jesse Said What?

In this case yes it is really no big deal.

But I would go ask the Boise St players if they were listening to what the Oregon running back was saying prior to last Thursday's game. You know they were. Saying you are going to give someone an *** whoopin is different than was JS said though.

Personally I would like to have Iowa's defense mad as heck. They wouldn't hit any harder, but they would not play as smart.

    Re: Jesse Said What?

yeah, i agree that a lot of times this has no affect but our high school team got really pumped up after some stupid stuff was said before a game my freshman year and we when we took it to them it was that much sweeter. also, ask reshard mendenhall if trash talking the opponent has an affect on the game. in his case it definitely wasn't a good idea.

IMO bulletin board material can sometimes make a player(s) have greater focus....not necessarily play harder. An example of somebody who always used his anger to get himself better focus was John McEnroe....yeah obviously he's not a fb player, but it was awesome how in the middle of a match when he needed an edge he would go nuts on the chair umpire (usually for no good reason) and then almost every time he would hit an ace right after his blow ups. It was classic to watch.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

I would highly doubt this counts a Bulletin Board material

    Re: Jesse Said What?

    Two words: Fred Barr.

    From the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald:
Iowa linebacker Fred Barr isn't afraid of making cutting remarks.

In September, before their huge intrastate clash with the Iowa State Cyclones, most of the Hawkeyes lobbed boring pleasantries at Ames through the media. Not Barr.

"I hate them. I really do," the senior said. "I literally hate them. I see red and it just makes me mad."

From a 2002 LA Times article:
Before playing cross-state rival Iowa State, Barr said: "I hate those guys. I can't stand them."

The comments have provided plenty of bulletin-board material, but Ferentz avoids playing the role of team censor.

"If you say you don't like the opposition, well, why would you?" Ferentz said. "That's stating the obvious there."

    Re: Jesse Said What?

When we spent money to put this baby up in Cedar Rapids, we pretty much said we don't care about bulletin board material:

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

I (and you) play softball with someone where the exact opposite is true. There aren't many out there like Johnny Mac, MJ, and Tiger that can hone that negative energy into positive results. More than likely, hawk players that get angry with the bulletin material will end up in the police blotter before they end up affecting football games...
