Combine Big 12 Network with Pac 10?

The Big 10 schools get a huge monetary advantage from the BTN and it seems like we're a ways off from getting a Big 12 Network going. However watching the LSU/Washington game this weekend got me thinking. With the natural two hour time difference it would be easier to get games from both conferences shown during FB and BB seasons, and with two conferences worth of sports the programming schedule would be more robust than the BTN.

The obvious downside is that the conferences and schools would have to share the money, but they'd have a huge footprint across two-thirds of the country. Cable systems in TX and CA would likely have to get on board. Not sure whether cable systems there carry the BTN.

At this point in our football budget I'd rather have a smaller piece of the pie and additional revenue than none at all. Worth the effort or wait until we get our own?

I think it is a good way to start. If the need ever arises that we need our own networks, then they can split off (like how ESPN 2 came out of ESPN)

Re: Combine Big 12 Network with Pac 10?

would the pac 10 benefit from having the big 12 on there? The biggest markets in this proposed network would already be in the pac 10 area wouldnt they?

Re: Combine Big 12 Network with Pac 10?

There is no benefit to a combined network and we would never be able to work out a deal. Does the revenue get split evenly between the conferences? Or does the Big XII get a 12/22nds, and the Pac 10 get 10/22nds? And how do we explain to the Washington's, Stanford's, and Arizona's, that it is fair when Texas gets twice as much of the profit as they do?

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

Re: Combine Big 12 Network with Pac 10?

No the state of texas is a huge market. The combination of Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington and Houston alone would make it a profitable venture. Add 7 more states and you have the ability to sell a lot of advertising to someone other than yourself. At this point you would be able to compete with national networks for the advertising dollars of companies.

I think that it is a great idea. There is already the big 12 pac 10 challenge in basketball.

    Make it happen.

I'd like to see it. The time zones make for a great stagger in the game times, and you'd be able to see football from noon until midnight. When I'm bored on a Saturday night, I love to catch a PAC 10 game.

Re: Combine Big 12 Network with Pac 10?

I'm sure the two conferences could work out some sort of revenue sharing deal even though they have an uneven number of schools. Heck just split the revenue evenly among all of them. And as far as TV markets, two of the top 10 are in CA and two in TX.

Just sitting on the sidelines is really hurting both of these conferences.

Re: Combine Big 12 Network with Pac 10?

Is the Big 10 network making any money yet? Sorry, that's a legit question, I just don't care enough to know. I do know when I watch a game on there, even a somewhat big game, I don't see any commercials that aren't just promoting another game. I know their cable subscriber revenue stream is probably starting to pay off some, but I just don't see how they are raking money in hand over fist with that network. Then again, I could be very wrong with that assumption as I now nothing about their national stake or how many people outside of Big 10 fans actually watch the channel. If it wouldn't have been for UNI playing Iowa, I wouldn't have turned the channel on.

Re: Combine Big 12 Network with Pac 10?

    There's already a pseudo-setup like this with FSN for football (11:00/11:30 Big 12; 5:30/6:00 Big 12; 9:00 Pac-10). You'd need a fourth game at 2:30 (Pac-10) to fill out the slate.

The biggest problem is that the FSN affiliates aren't currently required to show the games. They can still show local 5th grade flag football or an octogenarian horseshoes tournament if they so choose.

I'm not sure overall, but I believe each school gets just under $10M each year because of it.

I don't think they can schedule a game to compete with the ABC game. The BTN rarely has games at 2.30. When they do, I think it is because the ABC game is at 11 (i.e. OSU/Mich).

Another option would be to explore putting games on the Fox broadcast network (i.e. channel 17 in Des Moines). I don't know if Fox has any interest in that.

Re: Combine Big 12 Network with Pac 10?

"Regular" Fox would have zero interest. They have MLB on Saturdays through the regular season (Oct. 3), plus postseason on Oct. 17-24-31.

Plus, Fox is losing the BCS to ESPN starting in January 2011. That means the only college football game they'll show is the Cotton Bowl.

The goal here is not to get more games on TV, although that could very well be true, the goal is to keep the money and profits in house.

Michigan, Penn State and Ohio State all went for it with the Big 10 Network.
